A day in the life...

:: 6 am, view from the porch of the house/6 h, vue de la galerie de la maison ::

:: 6:30, fun in the hammock/6 h 30, on s'amuse dans le hamac ::

:: 7 am, Papayas, mangoes and grapes for breakfast/7 h, papayes, mangues et raisins pour déjeuner ::

:: 8 am, papa is getting us some coconuts from the tree right beside the house/8 h, papa va nous chercher des noix de coco dans l'arbre juste à côté de la maison ::

:: 9 am, the girls play in the pool/9 h, les filles s'amusent dans la piscine ::

:: Bananas that will be ready in 2-3 weeks beside the pool/Des bananes qui seront prêtes dans 2-3 semaines à côté de la piscine ::

Noon, first grocery shopping experience in Dominical Mercadito (pretty expensive, from now on, we will do our weekly shopping in San Isidro, 30 km from the house, when going to the farmer's market on Thursdays).

1 pm, lunch in Dominical at Maracuya Natural food. Deliciously hippie and healthy!/13 h, dîner à Dominical au Maracuya Natural food. Délicieusement grano!

:: 3 pm, shell gathering at Dominicalito beach (the tide was too high for swimming)/15 h, collecte de coquillages à la plage de Dominicalito (la marée était trop haute pour la baignade) ::

:: 6 pm, delicious raw dinner: the best pineapple ever, amazing rambutans (hairy litchees), bananas criollas - taste like vanilla, yum!

:: 7 pm, there is a praying mantis on our front door/19 h, il y a une menthe religieuse sur notre porte ::

As far as insects go, it's pretty much a baptism of fire. We saw a huge (poisonous?) spider on the side of the pool, a snake while walking back from the pool, tons of lizards at the beach (small and big ones) and Mara and I got bitten by fire ants on our feet... This morning, nobody wanted to believe Mathilde when she said she was afraid of a moving stick (she is a bit outside of her comfort zone with all the bugs, and she is a bit over the top panicky when she sees one...). Well, she was right, it was a big bug that really looked like a stick. JF found a big cockroach or something similar in his sneaker too. We are not the only ones loving Costa Rica!

In the end, we will be staying in the bigger house since the other one was a bit too open concept for us (no walls in the kitchen) and the 3 rooms were separated from each other (motel-like) and the girls would have needed to go outside at night to come and see us. Check it out here: it is Honeysurf, it looks nicer in photos, of course (we will be in Lagunas sunshine)! Let's just say they were not thrilled about it... And it was moldy (it seems like it is a common problem here with all the rain) and it smelled like dog... after having been cleaned... The only thing is that the big house is already rented for the week between Christmas and New Years's, but the owner will leave us his place for that week and go somewhere else. He had a maid come and clean the house thoroughly today. It is much better! She is coming back for 5 more hours tomorrow... I feel so weird to not be able to communicate well with her, especially for the basic stuff...

We are in adaptation mode and taking it all in... and it's all good!

Taimarie, yes, I am sending you some mango hugs!

Hi Catherine, it was so nice & interesting to find your blog especially while I'm en route to Costa Rica myself. Visiting Jan/Feb to find a place to live. I have a 6 1/2 y.o. daughter, & also a 3y.o. son.
For the rest of 2011 I'm in Bulgaria - daughter attends Waldorf Kindergarten now, but keeping her in a Waldorf school is limiting for our move, so 6 mo's ago I shifted to consider unschooling or Waldorf Homeschooling.
Today I got your comment on an article we both read (from Marilia's blog Tripping Mom) & was thrilled to see your gorgeous photos & so much valuable info:farmers markets, possibility of being 100% raw, bio greens available, etc.
I will def be bringing my VitaMix along ;)
