Merry Christmas, Ranger Don!

On the 25th, we left Tucson and headed towards New Mexico, since we had to be in Albuquerque for the 27th for an unschooling conference we really wanted to attend. We zoomed through Tombstone, a Far West city that is almost like a big theater set, but it was awefully quiet on that Christmas day. We drove all the way to Chiricahua National Monument and arrived after dark. Since we could not find any camping spot that was big enough for our rig (the camping was empty, only two spots were taken), we parked at a horse trailer parking lot where there wasn't any No camping sign.

At 9:30 the next morning, a ranger pulled up and asked for our papers and told us there was a no camping outside of the campground policy in the park. We crossed our fingers that Ranger Don (a made-up name since I can't remember his name...) would not write us a fine as a Christmas present... He actually called another ranger, who also pulled in beside us and they talked about our case... Finally, they were super nice and told us it would have costed us $75, but they only asked us to pay for the camping night ($12). Pfew!

Ouf!

Then, we decided to go hike in the beautiful mossy hoodoos of that park. We were still pretty sick from the cold we caught in Tucson and huffed and puffed and coughed our way down and up the trail. It was a really beautiful spot and there even was some snow!

Merry Christmas! I'm glad the rangers were kind! Some can be really...um...let's just say some abide by the rules big time.

I've noticed that you and I take photos in a very similar style. (Although you may not see that on my blog lately since i can only use my camera right now ;( )

happy christmas!
