Self-care for a travelling mom

My sweet friend Kathy just published her first e-book, The Bliss Filled Mama: Self-Care for Soulful Mothering, (she also includes an MP3 audio version, which I LOVE). Today, she is offering a free copy of her e-book and MP3 audio version to one of my readers! Keep reading and leave a comment to enter the draw! If you have been following her blog, you would know how funny this gal is and how creative too! I knew I could learn a thing or two from her... To be honest, a part of me felt a bit reluctant to read it because I was worried that it would make me feel like I was not taking good care of myself lately, because you know, I am not sewing my own clothes or knitting anything for my twins' upcoming birthday... But you know what? Kathy made me realize that I was in fact filling my own cup differently than I was before (when I was a perfect little Waldorf mom...).

Ok, I know, some of you will say that traveling is in itself self-care, and part of it is true. However, it can also be very intense since you don't have much in terms of help or community. Grandparents are thousands of kilometers away and friends are only reachable through Skype...

Before reading Kathy's book, I felt a bit guilty for not spending much of my time in creative activities, like I used to back home. Maybe because of my Waldorf background, I thought those were really the best way to recharge my vital energy, but what I realized reading her e-book is that the simplest things are also self-care... I don't need to knit solstice hats for my girls (especially here in Costa Rica!!) of sew myself a dress (anyways, I came to the conclusion that sewing makes me more stressed than recharged) to fill my batteries. Actually, whatever I feel like doing when I don't force myself to do something to keep up with the Joneses (or rather in my case the amazingly creative blogging community!) is what naturally recharges me since I gravitate around it! How simple and liberating is that!

So ready or not, and as Kathy says embarrassing or not, here is my list of self-care activities right now :

-Photography
-Writing (as in blogging)
-Going to the market in Costa Rica
-Reading in the hammock

-Reading inspiring blogs and listening to inspiring YouTube videos
-Drinking the amazing smoothies I make with the delicious Costarican fruits I have access to here
-My morning walks

-Playing in the sea with my family
-Boogieboarding
-Swimming in waterfalls
-Coloring mandalas with my girls

-Living in Costa Rica for 5 months
-Planning more travels with my partner
-Clean sheets
-Discovering a new area of Costa Rica
-Skyping with friends that I dearly miss
-Telling Aesop fables to the girls
-Hearing a toucan or a howler monkey
-Watching the sunset on the beach
-A hug from my amazing partner
-Making coral necklaces with Mathilde

-An outing way too late at night with my girls and partner to have deserts at a local restaurant on full moon night
-Doing less in a day
-Hearing my girls laugh together
-Sunbathing. Every. Single. Day

And just acknowledging that I do some of these things everyday makes me feel more recharged! And when I take care of myself, I am much less stressed out and I can be a better person, a better mom, a better partner... This is a work in progress, friends!

Dinner on the roof

We are just back from an amazing evening with a great homeschooling family that lives in such a cool artsy house with a 180 degree view of the sea (and mangroves). We had a delicious potluck dinner on the roof of their house (they had made calamari - that they themselves cleaned today - pasta!). It was such a heartwarming encounter!

On revient tout juste d'une superbe soirée avec une sympathique famille qui fait l'école à la maison et qui habite dans une maison d'artistes vraiment originale avec une vue 180 degrés de la mer (et des mangroves). Nous avons partagé un repas sur le toit de leur maison (elles avaient fait des pâtes aux calmars qu'elles avaient elles-mêmes nettoyés aujourd'hui!). Quelle belle rencontre qui nourrit l'âme et le cœur!

Since some of you seemed to have enjoyed coming with us for our morning walk, I tought I would bring you with us to the Uvita Feria, where we go every Saturday morning. I talked about it during our first couple of weeks here. Yes, it really is an expat market but after being here almost 3 months, it feels great to have a bit of a sense of community... What I love there is that I speak Spanish at one table, turn around, speak English at the next and walk 5 feets and speak French at the other one.

Étant donné que certains d'entre vous semble avoir aimé venir faire la ballade matinale avec nous l'autre jour, j'ai pensé vous amener à la Feria de Uvita, où nous allons tous les samedis matins. J'ai parlé de ce marché au cours des premières semaines de notre séjour ici. Oui, c'est vraiment un marché d'expats, mais après 3 mois ici, j'aime bien ce sentiment de communauté que j'y retrouve... J'adore parler espagnol à une table, me retourner et parler anglais à l'autre, puis marcher quelques pas et parler français à une autre.

My first stop is always Maoren's table. She has a wonderful organic farm (that I hope we will have a chance to visit soon) and has the most amazing greens I have seen in Costa Rica (kale, 2 or 3 types of spinach, purslane, arugula, bok choy, many types of lettuce and more greens that I have never seen before), she also has great tomatoes, cucs, herbs, farm fresh eggs and today she even had some organic watermelons.

Mon premier arrêt est toujours la table de Maoren. Elle a une ferme bio (que j'espère avoir la chance de visiter un jour) et elle vend les plus belles verdures que j'ai vu au Costa Rica (du kale, 2 ou 3 types d'épinards, du pourpier, de la roquette, du bok choy, plusieurs types de laitue et d'autres verdures que je n'ai jamais vues auparavant), elle a aussi de délicieuses tomates, des concombres, des fines herbes, des œufs de la ferme et aujourd'hui elle avait même des melons d'eau bio.

Next to her, is Maria's table (the temptation table!). Maria makes the best tzaziki from her homemade bulgar yogurt that she serves with homemade spicy plantain chips (yum!); shea also makes delicious smoked spicy sauce, mango and blackberry jams, raw nut butters, banana vinegar, homemade cheeses - her basil chèvre is delicious! She also sells local organic fair trade coffee, chocolate, coconut oil, raw nuts, raw honey... You get the idea!

Juste à côté, il y a la table de Maria (la table des tentation!). Maria fait le meilleur tatziki à partir de son yogurt bulgare maison qu'elle sert avec des chips de plantain épicées (miam!); elle fait aussi de la confiture de mangues ou de mûres, une délicieuse sauce épicée fumée, des beurres de noix crus, du vinaigre de bananes, des fromages maison - son chèvre au basilic est délicieux! Elle vend aussi du café, du chocolat, des noix crues, de l'huile de coco, du miel cru, tous locaux, équitables et bio... Ça vous donne une idée!

Then I go to this man to get fruits. He just sold us his last cacao fruit today (I think the season is over), some good melons, mangoes, pineapples, papayas, bananas... He also sells cacao beans and rambutan wine (remember the hairy litchees?), pretty exotic stuff!

Puis, je vais voir cet homme pour acheter des fruits. Il m'a vendu son dernier fruit de cacao ce matin (je crois que la saison est terminée...), de bons cantaloups, des mangues, des ananas, des papayes, des bananes... Il vend aussi des graines de cacao crues et du vin de ramboutans (vous vous souvenez des litchis chevelus?), plutôt exotique, n'est-ce pas?

By then, we are pretty warm and thirsty and stop at this table for one or two glasses each of freshly pressed orange juice.

À ce stade, on a pas mal chaud et on a soif, alors on s'arrête à cette table pour boire un ou deux verres de jus d'orange fraîchement pressé chacun.

Cathy's table is just beside her and we chat a bit, because when you sweat like a mad woman doing Pilates with someone 3 mornings a week, you bond, you know!

La table de Cathy est juste à côté, alors on échange quelques mots, parce que quand on transpire à fond en faisant du Pilates avec quelqu'un 3 matins par semaine, on crée des liens!

And we finish with Gilles's table. His table was pretty empty this morning already (and Gilles did not want to be in the photo), but he makes delicious chocolate bread, cookies, bagels, focaccias and did I say chocolate bread? He even makes maple butter from maple syrup he imports (don't ask the price...).

Et on finit par la table de Gilles. Sa table était déjà plutôt vide ce matin (et Gilles ne voulait pas être dans la photo), mais il fait du délicieux pain au chocolat, de succulents biscuits, des bagels, des foccacias et est-ce que j'ai dit du pain au chocolat? Il fait même du beurre d'érable à partir de sirop d'érable qu'il importe (ne demandez pas combien ça coûte...).

And we go home all sweaty, jump in the pool, cut a watermelon in half, eat it with a spoon and call it lunch! I love this tropical life!

Et on retourne à la maison en nage, on saute dans la piscine, on coupe un melon d'eau en deux, on le mange à la cuillère et on a un dîner! J'adore cette vie tropicale!

Je me souviens de ce moment comme si c'était hier... Été 2009, nous sommes à la fameuse plage des Enfants de la Terre (une école Waldorf du coin), à North Hatley. Je discute avec mon copain Martin qui passe lui aussi une grande partie de son été ici, à s'amuser avec ses enfants et sa blonde. JF, lui, est à la maison, en train de s'occuper de la ferme ou d'un projet qui s'y rattache (faire du fromage ou du pain entre deux contrats de traduction, refaire une clôture, semer du pâturage, je ne sais plus...). Je lui parle de tout le travail que nous avons à faire, nous qui pensions nous créer une vie simple de retour à la terre à la campagne... Il m'écoute et finit par me dire : Moi, j'ai choisi d'être la cigale, et vous, les fourmis.

I remember that moment like it was yesterday ... Summer 2009, we are at the famous beach of the Children of the Earth (a local Waldorf school), in North Hatley. I am talking to my friend Martin who spends much of his summer here, playing with his children and his partner. JF is at home, taking care of the farm or a related project (making cheese or bread between two translation contracts, working on the fences, planting pasture, I don't remember...). I tell him about all the work we do, we wanted to create a simpler life, back to the land in the countryside ... He listened to me and finally said: I chose to be the grasshopper, and you, the ants.

Cette image m'est toujours restée, et depuis lors, beaucoup de décisions ont été prises dans notre vie pour devenir un peu plus « cigales»... Quand les filles étaient petites, mes amies admiraient ma facilité à mener plein de projets de front, elles m'appelaient gentiment la petite fourmi ouvrière. Depuis plusieurs années déjà, je travaille à en faire moins, à réellement simplifier notre vie, afin d'être plus présente et surtout, moins stressée, ce qui a un impact énorme sur la qualité de ma présence auprès de ceux que j'aime. J'en ai déjà parlé ici et ici, notamment.

This image has always stayed with me, and since then, many decisions have been made in our life to become a little more like grasshopers... When the girls were little, my friends admired my ability to accomplish lots of projects simultaneously, they called me sweetly the little worker ant. For several years now, I worked on doing less, to really simplify our lives, to be more present and more importantly, less stressed, which has a huge impact on the quality of my presence with those I love. I have already mentioned it here and here, among other posts.

En 2010, on vendait la ferme et on partait au Yukon pour tout l'été sur la route... Et nous voici au Costa Rica pour 5 mois. Et le plus rigolo, c'est qu'en arrivant ici, à notre première maison, il y avait des chemins de fourmis coupeuses de feuilles juste dans notre entrée qui travaillaient constamment... Si vous vous souvenez bien, c'était pendant cette période de transition que la petite fourmi ouvrière en moi trouvait la vie de cigale un peu inconfortable...

In 2010, we sold the farm and left for the Yukon for the summer, on the road ... And here we are in Costa Rica for five months. And the funniest thing is that when we arrived here in our first home, there were loads of leaf-cutting ants in our entry way working constantly ... If you recall, it was during this transition period that the little working ant in me found this grasshopper life a bit uncomfortable...

Depuis que nous sommes arrivés à la nouvelle maison, la saison sèche a débuté et les cigales sont sorties. Elles chantent toute la journée et on en voit partout le soir... Leur présence à ce stade-ci de ma vie me fait sourire. Quelle belle analogie!

Since we arrived at the new house, the dry season has started and the cicadas are out. They sing all day and you see them everywhere in the evening ... Their presence at this stage of my life makes me smile. What a great analogy!

Nous sommes vraiment passés en mode unschooling et nous nous en portons tous très bien! Cette incroyable liberté nous rapproche, nous permet de mieux nous écouter et de nous respecter... Nos journées sont remplies de bonnes idées, de projets spontanés, de ballades et beaucoup de baignades...

We're really in unschooling mode now and we all are very happy about it! This brings us incredible freedom, we can better listen to each other and respect each others... Our days are filled with good ideas, spontaneous projects, ballads and lots of swimming ...

La chaleur des tropiques m'a beaucoup aidée à ralentir et à en faire encore moins. Je bouge moins vite ici, je marche plus lentement, je lis dans le hamac aux heures les plus chaudes, je joue dans la mer ou dans la piscine avec les filles, je dessine avec elles à l'ombre sous la brise de la vallée, je cuisine peu (on se contente d'une majorité d'aliments crus vitement préparés et de quelques repas cuits le soir; il fait beaucoup trop chaud pour faire fonctionner le four!).

The heat of the tropics has helped me to slow down and do even less. I move more slowly here, I walk more slowly, I read in the hammock during the hottest part of the day, I play in the sea or in the pool with the girls, I draw with them in the shade under the breeze of the valley, I don't cook much (we are all satisfied with a majority of raw foods quickly prepared and a few cooked meals in the evening; it's much too hot to use the oven!).

Je crois que je peux enfin dire que j'ai troqué mon rôle de fourmi pour celui de cigale... Et je me sens tellement bien!

I think I can finally say that I swapped my ant's role to that of grasshopper ... And it feels so good!

Our morning walk

If you would come with us on our morning walk, here is the view you would get after climbing the steep hill right after our house... It would be only 7 o'clock (or earlier if the howler monkeys woke you up that morning...) and the sun wouldn't be really bright yet, but you could see the sea in the distance...

Si vous veniez avec nous faire notre ballade matinale, voici la vue que vous auriez après avoir grimpé la pente prononcée juste après notre maison... Il serait seulement 7 h (si les singes hurleurs vous avaient réveillés ce matin-là) et le soleil ne serait pas encore très fort, mais vous pourriez voir la mer au loin...

Then you would walk past beautiful houses with fan palm trees in the entrance.

Puis vous passeriez à côté de superbes maisons avec des palmiers éventail dans l'entrée.

You would see lots of For sale signs and probably wonder, just like we did at first, how come there were so many. Then, you would find out that half of Costa Rica is for sale... as long as you offer the right price (so they can build another one and do the same thing again)...

Vous verriez beaucoup de maisons à vendre, et vous vous demanderiez sans doute, comme nous au début, pourquoi il y en a tant. Puis, vous comprendriez que la moitié du Costa Rica est à vendre... tant que vous offrez le bon prix (pour qu'ils puissent reconstruire une autre maison et recommencer)...

If you would stop five minutes, you could collect blue-green clay that you could pound and dry to use therapeutically afterwards. I would tell you that I actually was told that there are many veins of blue, green and purple clay in the area...

Si vous vous arrêtiez cinq minutes, vous pourriez ramasser de l'argile bleue-verte que vous pourriez réduire en poudre au mortier et sécher pour une utilisation thérapeutique par la suite. Je vous confierais qu'on m'a dit qu'il y avait plusieurs veines d'argile bleue, verte et mauve dans les environs...

Then the road would start to turn and you could see where you are coming from, on the other side of the valley. A dog from a local hotel would probably join you for the rest of the 5 km loop...

Puis, la route commencerait à tourner et vous pourriez voir d'où vous arrivez, de l'autre côté de la vallée. Le chien d'un hôtel du coin se joindrait sans doute à vous pour le reste de la boucle de 5 km...

And you would get closer to the sea. you could even start to smell it in the air...

Et vous vous approcheriez tranquillement de la mer, vous pourriez même commencer à la sentir dans l'air...

And you would walk past banana trees...

Et vous passeriez à côté de bananiers...

... of coconut trees...

... de cocotiers...

... and of ginger plants.

... et de plants de gingembre.

And the sun would start to be brighter and it would get ever warmer and the sky would be bright blue...

Et le soleil commencerait à briller plus fort, et ça réchaufferait encore plus et le ciel serait d'un bleu éclatant...

You would go down and up and down and up on the curvy road... And some mornings, depending on where the wind was coming, you could start hearing the sea...

Vous descendriez et remonteriez et redescendriez et remonteriez sur le chemin sinueux... Et certains matins, tout dépendant d'où viendrait le vent, vous pourriez commencer à entendre la mer...

And would be amazed to notice the red earth and the lush green ferns meet the sky...

Et vous auriez le souffle coupé de voir la terre rouge et les fougère d'un vert luxuriant qui rejoignent le ciel...

And finally, another reward: a beautiful window on the sea...

Et finalement, une autre récompense : une magnifique fenêtre sur la mer...

... and you would know that there are good chances that you would swim right there that afternoon...

... et vous sauriez qu'il y aurait de bonnes chances que vous vous y baignez cet après-midi...

Then you would go down and walk 2 minutes of the side of the highway...

Puis, vous redescendriez et marcheriez 2 minutes le long de l'autoroute...

And you would come into the village...

Et vous rentreriez au village...

If it would be a Tuesday or a Friday, you could get some nice fresh fish right here... And on any day, you could stop at the Pancito to get delicious Integral bread and much more delicious treats!

Si c'était un mardi ou un vendredi, vous pourriez acheter du bon poisson frais juste ici... Et tous les jours de la semaine, vous pourriez arrêter au Pancito acheter du délicieux pain intégral ou d'autres succulentes gâteries!

Then, when you would see the bridge, you knew you had about 1 km left to climb to get to the house... You would surely spot some Blue Morpho butteflies flying around you...

Puis, quand vous arriveriez au pont, vous sauriez qu'il vous resterait environ 1 km de montée avant d'arriver à la maison... Vous pourriez sans doute apercevoir des papillons Morpho bleus voler autour de votre tête...

And by then, the sun would be almost unbearably warm at this time of year (it would only be 8:30...), and this is usually where children get whiny and sweaty adults get water dripping down their legs... but there is the song of the Toucan that would greet you (and we can pretty much always spot one at this place, which is rare... you hear Toucans much more than you see them in Costa Rica) and there is the promise of a cool pool and if lucky, a papa-made-with-love smoothie waiting...

Et rendu-là, le soleil serait presque insupportablement chaud à ce temps-ci de l'année (il serait seulement 8 h 30...), et c'est là que les enfants se mettent à râler habituellement et les adultes baignés de sueur ont de l'eau qui commence à leur couler le long des jambes... mais il y a le chant du toucan qui vous encouragerait (et qu'on peut presque toujours apercevoir à cet endroit, ce qui est rare... on entend les Toucans beaucoup plus qu'on ne les aperçoit au Costa Rica) et la promesse d'une piscine fraîche et si on est chanceux, d'un smoothie fait avec amour par papa qui nous attend...

Samara... encore!

Our plan was to spend our last day with my Mom near Playa del Coco, since it was the closest beach to Liberia. When we arrived there, we found it so depressing (we also went to nearby Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama, a beach frequented mostly by locals, but they were equally depressing) that we decided to drive all the way to Samara! We had such a good time there! We even ended the day at our favorite italian restaurant in Costa Rica, Al Manglar, where Rosa told us she had some day-old lasagna for us (we all know lasagna is even better the next day). We had our Pprosciutto crudo pizza with her amazing spicy oil and topped it with her homemade Tiramisu! It was a big challenge to switch from Italian to Spanish! Che fatica!

Notre plan était de passer notre dernière journée à Playa del Coco, étant donné que c'était la plage la plus proche de Liberia. Quand nous sommes arrivés là, nous avons trouvé l'endroit tellement déprimant (et nous sommes aussi allés voir Playa Hermosa et Playa Panama, une plage de locaux près de là, mais elles étaient toutes deux tout aussi déprimantes) que nous avons décidé de parcourir la route qui nous séparait de Samara! Nous y avons passé une magnifique journée! Nous avons même fini la journée dans notre restaurant italien préféré au Costa Rica, Al Manglar, où Rosa nous a tout de suite dit qu'elle avait de la lasagne fraîche de la veille (tout le monde sait que la lasagne est encore meilleure le lendemain). Nous avons aussi mangé notre pizza au prosciutto crudo avec son huile piquante incroyable et avons couronné le tout par son excellent tiramisù. C'était tout un défi de passé de l'espagnol à l'italien! Che fatica!

El Punto hotel, Liberia

We stayed two nights in Liberia during our trip with my mom in this really cool hotel. It is right in the middle of town, so it is a bit noisy, but it really stands out from other Costan Rica hotels.

Nous avons passé deux nuits à Liberia dans cet hôtel vraiment sympa pendant notre voyage avec ma mère. Il est situé au centre-ville, alors c'est un peu bruyant, mais il se démarque vraiment des autres hôtels du Costa Rica.

There are many outside areas (library, lounge, TV area) and there is even a great kid corner that kept the girls busy while we worked.

Il y a plusieurs aires extérieures (bibliothèque, aire de repos, coin télé) et il y a même un super coin pour les enfants qui a bien occupé les filles pendant que nous travaillions.

:: The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful garden with amazing flowers and birds (here: hanging lobster claw)/Il y a un magnifique jardin avec de superbes fleurs et des oiseaux tout autour de l'hôtel (ici, des héliconies rostrées) ::

:: The hotel has been created in an old school building. There are lofts in most of the rooms. C'est en fait une ancienne école qui a été transformée en hôtel. Il y a même des lofts dans la plupart des chambres. ::

Just beside there are really cool art galleries (also in the old school building), as well as a pretty good restaurant (Casa Verde). I would fly to Liberia and stay there instead of San José anytime!

Juste à côté de l'hôtel, il y a des galeries d'art vraiment mignonnes (aussi situées dans l'ancien bâtiment de l'école), ainsi qu'un bon resto (Casa Verde). J'arriverais à l'aéroport de Liberia et je resterais ici au lieu de rester à San José n'importe quand!

We drove around beautiful Lake Arenal with little girls that had spent way too much time in the car already... Traveling with children can be tricky and moving everyday or every two days is just too much for little souls... and then, it becomes unpleasant for all the adults involved. My Mom has been such a good sport!

Nous avons fait la route qui fait le tour du Lac Arenal avec de petites filles qui commençaient à avoir leur voyage de faire de la route... Voyager avec des enfants peut être difficile et changer de place tous les jours ou tous les deux jours est trop exigeant pour de petites puces... puis, ça devient désagréable pour les adultes aussi. Ma mère a été une vraie championne de la tolérance!

I know many of you wonder how come we can spend 5 months in Costa Rica, if we inherited a crazy amount of money or if we ever work... We do work! We have days without work, but it is rather rare. We just finished a very intense rush where the both of us had to be working around the clock... which makes for grumpy children... But this is our life and we love the flexibility it gives us. We feel pretty blessed we can work and travel. It really feels like there is no separation between work and play and this is a great feeling...

Je sais que plusieurs d'entre vous se demandent comment on fait pour passer 5 mois au Costa Rica et si on travaille parfois ou si on a juste hérité d'une grosse somme d'argent... Bien sûr qu'on travaille! Il y a parfois des journées sans travail, mais c'est plutôt rare. On vient juste de terminer un gros rush pendant lequel on devait tous les deux travailler en temps plus que plein... ce qui n'est pas facile pour les filles qui deviennent irritables... Mais c'est la vie que nous avons choisie et on ne la changerait pas pour rien au monde. On adore la flexibilité que cela nous procure. On se sent vraiment choyés de pouvoir travailler tout en voyageant. C'est comme s'il n'y avait pas de séparation entre la vie/le plaisir et le travail et c'est un sentiment extraordinaire...

On this trip with my mom, we worked in different hotels and cafés. Sometimes we have to drive up to an hotel where there is free unsecured wi-fi and work in the lobby... or in the truck! For those who followed our road-trip to the Yukon 2 years ago, you will remember that we also worked mainly in RV park camping laundromats and that we even got kicked out by angry Germans! We sure live dangerously!

Pendant ce voyage avec ma mère, nous avons travaillé dans différents hôtels et cafés. Parfois, il faut se rendre à un hôtel où il y a du wifi gratuit non sécurisé et travailler dans le lobby... ou dans le camion! Pour ceux qui ont suivi notre voyage au Yukon sur la route il y a deux ans, vous vous souviendrez que nous travaillions principalement dans les laundromats de camping et qu'on s'est même fait jeter dehors par de furieux Allemands! On aime vivre dangereusement!

On our way to Liberia, we stopped to visit some friends who have bought a piece of land, just beside Tenorio national Park, in Bijagua. It is an amazing spot and they see two volcanoes from their house!! We wanted to go hike along the Rio Celeste (an amazing blue river in which, according to the legend, the Gods dipped their paintbrushes when they were painting the sky) in the Tenorio national Park, but we were too rushed.

En route vers Liberia, nous nous sommes arrêtés pour visiter des amis qui ont acheté une terre tout près du parc national Tenorio, à Bijagua. C'est un endroit incroyable et ils ont une vue sur deux volcans de leur maison!! On voulait faire la rando le long du Rio Celeste (une superbe rivière bleue, dans laquelle les Dieux auraient trempés leurs pinceaux tandis qu'ils peignaient le ciel, comme le veut la légende) dans le parc national Tenorio, mais nous n'avions pas le temps.

This trip really made us realize the amazing biodiversity of Costa Rica. There are 17 micro-climates and you can litterally drive through many of them in a matter of hours.

La Fortuna et le volcan Arenal

We set up to do a hike to go as close as possible to the Arenal volcano (that has been dormant for the past couple years, so we can't see lava flowing at night as it used to be), but I had to turn around with Mara and Mathilde because it was a more strenuous hike than we thought (and there were lots of stinging ants, Mathilde freaked out, started running in the trail to not walk into them - there was a good 20 meters stretch COVERED in ants - and fell and got stung in many places, let's just say it was not a good way to start a hike).

Nous voulions faire une rando qui nous amènerait le plus près possible du volcan Arenal (qui est en dormance depuis quelques années, et donc on ne peut plus voir de lave couler la nuit comme c'était le cas auparavant), mais j'ai dû revenir sur mes pas avec Mara et Mathilde parce que ça s'est avéré plus difficile que nous pensions (et il y avait beaucoup de fourmis piquantes, Mathilde a paniqué, s'est mise à courir pour les éviter - il y avait un bon 20 mètre de sentier COUVERT de fourmis - et elle est tombée et s'est fait piquer à plusieurs endroits, disons juste que ce n'est pas une très bonne façon de commencer une rando).

Then, we ended the day in the hot springs. The owner of our hotel in El Castillo (a little town just out of Arenal) told us of a spot where locals go enjoy the hot springs for free (instead of paying the exorbitant price in the luxurious lodges). We all had a blast!

Puis, nous avons fini la journée dans des sources thermales. La propriétaire de notre hôtel à El Castillo (un petit village juste à côté d'Arenal) nous avait parlé d'une endroit où vont les locaux pour profiter des sources gratuitement (au lieu de payer les prix exorbitants dans les refuges luxueux). Nous avons adoré!

We arrived just before dinner at the Poas Lodge (not to confuse with the Poas Volcano logde, which is in another price range). The view is just AMAZING! It is a 270 degree view of the Central Valley at 2 100 meters of altitude, 3 km from the top of the Poas volcano (so you are right ON the volcano).

Nous sommes arrivés juste avant souper au Poas Lodge (à ne pas confondre avec le Poas Volcano logde, qui est dans une autre fourchette de prix). La vue est INCROYABLE! Il y a une vue à 270 degrés de la vallée centrale à 2 100 mètres d'altitude, à 3 km seulement du sommet du volcan Poas (on est carrément SUR le volcan).

The lounge atmosphere of the restaurant was unlike any place we had seen in Costa Rica. This place was truly our magic moment of the trip.

Right after breakfast (at 8 am), we went to see the volcano. You have to arrive early, because at around 10 everyday, the crater is already covered with clouds. It was stunning!

Tout de suite après déjeuner (à 8 h), nous sommes allés voir le volcan. Il faut arriver tôt, parce que vers 10 h tous les jours, le cratère est déjà couvert de nuages. C'était magnifique!

Then we kept hiking to a volcanic lake.

Puis, nous avons continué notre rando jusqu'à un lac volcanique.

We returned to Chubascos for lunch and enjoyed their wonderful Tasting plate, as well as their sopa negra (black bean soup) with their famous batidos (smoothies) and desserts. Afterwards, we drove through Villa blanca, that seems like it is always in the clouds.

Nous sommes retournés chez Chubascos pour dîner et nous avons pris leur délicieuse assiette dégustation, ainsi que leur sopa negra (soupe aux haricots noirs) avec leurs fameux batidos (smoothies) et desserts. Par la suite, nous avons pris la route qui passe par Villa blanca, un endroit qui semble être perpétuellement dans les nuages.

Des amis nous avaient dit que si nous devions choisir un seul endroit à visiter au Costa Rica (pour les animaux), c'était celui-là! Ils avaient bien raison! Je suis bien contente que nous ayons pris toute la journée (et non seulement l'après-midi comme le font plusieurs qui se rendent au Poas le matin). C'était très tranquille en avant-midi et le dîner-buffet était vraiment bien. Les sentiers sont magnifiques et les animaux époustouflants. J'ai par contre trouvé le personnel parfois un peu blasé... Notre plus grande déception a été qu’il n’y avait que très peu d’information, souvent même le nom des animaux n’était pas indiqué sur les cages, les insectes n'étaient pas identifiés, etc. Si vous allez visiter La Paz Watefall Gardens, apportez avec vous les fameux petits dépliants plastifiés qui se vendent partout afin d’identifier vous-mêmes les animaux. Et si quelqu'un découvre une erreur d'identification (ou si vous connaissez le nom en français, notamment pour les colibris) des animaux plus bas, s.v.p. laissez un commentaire et je le changerai.

Friends had told us that if we were to choose only one place to visit in Costa Rica (to see animals), that was the one! They were right! I am glad that we took all day (and not only the afternoon as do many who go to the Poas volcano in the morning). It was very quiet in the morning and the dinner buffet was good. The trails are beautiful and the animals are amazing. However, I found the staff sometimes a little jaded ... Our biggest disappointment was that there was very little information, often even the names of animals are not indicated on the cages, the insects are not identified, etc.. If you go to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, bring the little laminated pamphlets that they sell everywhere with you to identify the animals yourself. And if someone catches a mistake I made in the name of the animals (or if you know the name in French, especially for the hummingbirds), please leave a comment so I can change it!

Nous avons quitté Ojochal hier pour se diriger vers la région du volcan Poas. Nous ne nous attendions pas à un changement de température aussi draconnien. Brrr!

A beach birthday...

We were invited by the super nice (Quebec-born) owners of a delicious creperie in Uvita (Creperia Marquesa) to the birthday celebration of their 8 yo son. By the same token, we discovered a beautiful quiet beach, 5 minutes from our house.

There is a nice cold river right there too which is nice to clean yourself from the salty water and sand, and cool down (the water from the sea is almost too hot!).

Equator sunsets...

At least a couple of times a week, we stay on the beach late enough to see the sunset (5:45), but if we are home, we just have to climb up the steep road to an abandonned house 2 minutes away from our house to have first row seats to this amazing show. It is incredible how fast the sun goes down here. You can litterally see it go down and "sink" in the sea...

Au moins quelques fois par semaine, on reste à la plage assez tard pour voir le coucher de soleil (17 h 45), mais si nous sommes à la maison, nous n'avons qu'à grimper la côte jusqu'à une maison abandonnée de l'autre côté de la route, à 2 minutes de chez nous pour avoir les premières loges pour assister à ce magnifique spectacle. C'est incroyable la vitesse à laquelle le soleil descend ici. On peut littéralement le voir rentrer dans la mer...

At 6:15, it is dark out and we get ready to eat. It feels a bit strange to be out in the dark so early "in summer", especially after experiencing the Yukon summers and the midnight sun, but I love the fact that the girls are out by 7:30 and we are all in bed pretty early too (which is impossible in the Yukon, especially when camping!). Then we are up early before it gets too warm to walk the beautiful 5 km loop that overlook the sea that goes through our doorstep (I will bring you with me soon!).

À 6 h 15, il fait noir et on se prépare à souper. C'est un peu étrange d'être dans le noir si tôt « en été », surtout après avoir goûté aux étés yukonnais et au soleil de minuit, mais j'adore le fait que les filles dorment à 7 h 30 et que nous sommes tous au lit assez tôt (ce qui est impossible au Yukon, surtout en camping!). Puis, on se lève tôt avant qu'il fasse trop chaud pour parcourir la boucle de 5 km qui surplombe la mer qui part de chez nous (je vous amènerai avec moi bientôt!).

Right now, there is so much I could tell you about, like our 4 nights stay in San José, my mom's arrival and our new truck... but right now, this is not what's on my mind.

Présentement, je pourrais vous parler de plusieurs choses, comme les 4 nuits passées à San José, l'arrivée de ma mère ou notre nouveau camion... mais à l'heure actuelle, ce n'est pas ce qui occupe mon esprit.

Right now, I am deeply sad, and worried... Because one of my best friend's husband, the father of my girls' best friends is very sick... sick like you are not supposed to be when you are a 35 years old athlete that grew up on a super healthy diet... Our friend is fighting an aggressive form of cancer right now and his whole family is suffering. I am sad, I am scared, I am worried.

Présentement, je suis très triste, et inquiète... Parce que le mari d'une de mes meilleures amies, le père des meilleurs amis de mes filles est très malade... malade comme on n'est pas sensé l'être quand on est un athlète de 35 ans qui a grandi avec une alimentation super saine... Notre ami combat une forme de cancer agressif et toute sa famille en souffre. Je suis triste, inquiète et j'ai peur.

As I watch the beautiful nature that surrounds me, I think of them, of how small we really are, how fragile, how vulnerable... And I pray.

Et quand j'observe la merveilleuse nature qui m'entoure, je pense à eux, à combien nous sommes petits, fragiles et vulnérables... Et je prie.

I rode from Samara to Nicoya in the back of a truck with a very chatty 6 yo who gave me the best Spanish crash course (and it reminded me so much of my little sister Valeria who did exactly the same when I first arrived in Italy at 17!) - I even learn that Smurf in Spanish is Pitufo. Actually, this is one of the most fascinating words I find as a translator... Check how many different translations there is for this funny word. This, and the fact that the rooster on the Corn Flake box doesn't sing Cocorico in all the languages (I can't remember what it was in Italian, but I sure remember that made for a very funny breakfast once!).

J'ai fait le voyage de Samara à Nicoya dans la valise d'un camion avec une très bavarde petite fille de 6 ans qui m'a donnée le meilleur cours d'espagnol (et ça me rappelait tellement ma petite soeur italienne, Valeria, qui avait fait exactement la même chose quand je suis arrivée en Italie à 17 ans) - j'ai même appris que le grand Schtroumpf en espagnol est Papi Pitufo. En fait, c'est l'un des mots que je trouve des plus fascinants en tant que traductrice... Voyez combien il existe de traductions différentes pour ce charmant petit mot. Ceci, et le fait que le coq sur la boîte de Corn Flakes ne chante pas Cocorico dans toutes les langues (je ne me souviens pas ce qu'il disait en italien, mais je me rappelle que j'avais bien rigolé lors d'un certain déjeuner!).

We tought we could make it work with a 5 seater, but the fines are crazy salty here, so we don't want to take a chance. So we are going to San José to buy a new truck, that will also be easier to sell at the end of the high season./Attente de l'autobus à Nicoya (nous avons vendu notre camion à Samara étant donné que nous avions besoin d'un 7 passagers comme nous avons de la visite qui s'en vient. Nous nous rendons donc à San José pour acheter un nouveau camion, qui sera aussi plus facile à revendre à la fin de la haute saison. ::

To tell you the truth, I was a bit scared of the 5 hour bus ride (that can easily turn into a 7 or 8 hour bus ride depending on road blocks...) to San José, but the info center in Samara reassured me that it was just like a Greyhound with A/C. Surprise, surprise! There was no A/C and no toilet on the bus... and I just had 2 large papaya and pineapple smoothies for lunch, as well as 4 glasses of water... oh! And watermelon too... and we were sitting at the back of the bus, which meant a lot of bumps and movement... 20 minutes into the ride, I felt it would be a very, very long ride... I badly needed to pee and already felt pretty nauseous... I closed my eyes and concentrated on not being sick... An hour later, all that was going through my mind was how I could find a way to pee without being seen... There was none. Nada. Niente. So, I walked up the front of the bus and did what all mama do: told the driver my child badly needed to pee. There's one thing you need to know about Costarican: they want to please you and they will do anything to do so. He reassured me he would stop in 20 minutes. An hour later, we still did not stop... I think I never felt so uncomfortable in my life... Finally, 2 1/2 hours into the ride, he stopped. I climbed over Mathilde and rushed like a mad woman to the bathroom. Needless to say, the photos have been taken AFTER that stop!

Pour vous dire la vérité, le voyage d'autobus de 5 heures (qui peut facilement se transformer en un voyage de 7 ou 8 heures en fonction des travaux routiers...) pour San José m'inquiétait un peu, mais le centre d'information touristique à Samara m'a rassuré que c'était exactement comme un Greyhound avec la climatisation. Surprise, surprise! Il n'y avait pas de climatisation et pas de toilettes dans le bus ... et je venais juste de boire 2 smoothies papayes et ananas pour le dîner, ainsi que 4 verres d'eau ... oh! Et du melon d'eau aussi ... et nous étions assis à l'arrière de l'autobus, donc beaucoup de bosses et de mouvement ... 20 minutes après le départ, j'ai senti que ce serait une voyage très, très long... J'avais grand besoin de faire pipi et j'avais mal au cœur... Je fermai les yeux et me concentrais pour ne pas être malade... Une heure plus tard, je ne pensais qu'à trouver un moyen de faire pipi sans être vu... Il n'y en n'avait pas. Nada. Niente. Alors, j'ai marché jusqu'à l'avant du bus et j'ai fait ce que toutes les mamans font : j'ai dit au chauffeur que ma fille avait très envie de faire pipi. Il y a une chose que vous devez savoir sur les Costaricains : ils veulent plaire, et ils feront n'importe quoi pour le faire. Il m'a rassuré qu'il allait s'arrêter dans 20 minutes. Une heure plus tard, nous n'avions toujours pas arrêté... Je pense que je ne me suis jamais sentie si mal à l'aise de ma vie ... Enfin, 2 1/2 heures après le départ, il s'est enfin arrêté. J'ai grimpé par-dessus Mathilde et je me précipitai comme une folle à la salle de bain. Inutile de dire que les photos ont été prises après cet l'arrêt!

9 to 5... at the beach

This morning, JF dropped us at the beach at 9 since he had to go to Nicoya. The girls and I spent more time in the water than on the ground today. The beach here is amazing with beautiful waves (much softer than the ones down where we live) and super clear water. It is a more touristy area and there are more people on the beach, as well as restaurants where you eat with your feet in the sand.

Ce matin, JF nous a laissé à la plage à 9 h car il devait aller à Nicoya. Les filles et moi avons passé plus de temps dans l'eau que sur la terre ferme aujourd'hui. La plage ici est incroyable avec de superbes vagues (beaucoup moins fortes que celles des plages où nous habitons) et de l'eau claire. C'est un coin plus touristique et il y a beaucoup de monde sur la plage, ainsi que des restaurants où on mange les pieds dans le sable.

We have been in Costa Rica for over 6 weeks, but we haven't seen much of it yet. So we decided to go explore a bit of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Nous sommes au Costa Rica depuis plus de 6 semaines, mais nous n'avons pas encore vu grand chose. Nous avons donc décidé d'explorer un peu la péninsule de Nicoya.

The change in vegetation was stricking. It is so much drier here on the peninsula. I hadn't seen any dry grass in long time... And we are just at the beginning of the dry season...

Le changement de végétation était frappant. C'est tellement plus sec ici sur la péninsule. Je n'avais pas vu d'herbe sèche depuis longtemps... Et ce n'est que le début de la saison sèche...

And if people need to make hay, it means the dry season is quite dry (that animals lack food)...

Et si les gens ont besoin de faire les foins, c'est que la saison sèche doit être très sèche (que les animaux manquent de nourriture)...

It seems to be a very agricultural area.

We arrived in Samara just after dark and most hotels on our list were full. The nice owners at Entre dos aguas suggested that we go at the Samara Info Center to find out where there was still some rooms available. Brenda there was so helpful and made many phone calls for us, but the few rooms available were over our budget. Her partner suggested we go for dinner since it was already pretty late (and he had told me all about the best italien, thai and sushi places in town while she was on the phone) and that they would keep looking for us and call us when they find something. We went to Al Manglar, an italian restaurant with an italian mama in the kitchen and we were not disappointed! The service was so fast (like faster than St. Hubert fast!) which was so unlike every other restaurant we went to in Costa Rica and it was such a blessing with tired and hungry little girls. The prosciutto crudo pizza was riminiscent of the best pizza I had in Italy and the Tiramisu was one of the best too (dare I say better than mine?). Then we got a call from Brenda and she had found a great place for us just 5 minutes out of town (a great family suite with a king size bed and 3 twin beds, with Wifi, a pool and breakfast included for $70!!). We are so lucky! Oh and did I also tell you that we tought the ferry was every hour but it was only 4 times a day and we arrived right on, 30 minutes before departure (and it left on time and arrived on time!). Thank you, Life!

Nous sommes arrivés à Samara juste après que la noirceur soit tombée et la plupart des hôtels sur notre liste étaient pleins. Les gentils propriétaires de Entre Dos Aguas ont suggéré que nous allions au Centre d'information de Samara pour savoir où il y avait encore quelques chambres disponibles. Brenda était très serviable et a fait de nombreux appels téléphoniques pour nous, mais les quelques chambres disponibles étaient trop chères pour notre budget. Son partenaire a suggéré que nous allions souper, car il était déjà assez tard (et il m'avait dit tout sur les meilleurs restos italiens, thaïlandais et les restos des sushis en ville tandis qu'elle était au téléphone) pendant qu'ils continuaient à regarder pour nous et qu'ils nous rappelleraient après avoir trouvé quelque chose. Nous sommes allés à Al Manglar, un restaurant italien avec une mamma italienne dans la cuisine et nous n'avons pas été déçus! Le service était très rapide (plus rapide que chez Saint-Hubert!), ce qui est bien différent de tous les autres restaurants que nous avons visité au Costa Rica et c'était une bénédiction avec des petites filles fatiguées et affamées. La pizza au prosciutto me rappelait la meilleure pizza que j'avais mangé en Italie et le Tiramisu a été l'un des meilleurs aussi (j'ose presque dire meilleur que le mien?). Ensuite, nous avons reçu un appel de Brenda et elle avait trouvé un super endroit pour nous à seulement 5 minutes de la ville (une grande suite familiale avec un lit king et 3 lits simples, avec Wifi, une piscine et petit déjeuner inclus pour 70 $!) . Nous sommes tellement chanceux! Oh, et je vous ai dit que nous pensions que le traversier était à chaque heure mais que ce n'était que 4 fois par jour et nous sommes arrivés juste à temps, 30 minutes avant le départ (et il est parti à temps et est arrivé à temps!). Merci, la vie!

Je crois que la Fête des rois est l'une des célébrations préférées des enfants. Mordre dans le gâteau avec anticipation en espérant trouver la fève! Chaque année nous la célébrons un peu différemment (2011, 2010, 2009), mais cette année est sans aucun doute la plus différente!

I think that 3 Kings' day is one the children's favorite celebration. Biting in the cake with anticipation hoping to get the bean! Each year, we celebrate a bit differently (2011, 2010, 2009), but this year is for sure the most different year!

If you're into surfing, Dominical is the place to go. However, its dangerous rip currents take the life of about 2 unknowingly swimmers a month... There are lifeguards, but only during the high season. At lower tide, it is a great beach to learn to surf and JF and Mercedes decided to take a lesson.

Si vous aimez le surf, Dominical est la place pour vous. Cependant, son dangereux flot de retour (qui n'est pas la même chose que le ressac) enlève la vie à environ 2 nageurs non avertis par mois... Il y a des sauveteurs, mais seulement pendant la haute saison. À marée basse, c'est une super plage pour apprendre à surfer et JF et Mercedes ont décidé de prendre un cours.

Their teacher was many times US champion and was on the World Cup for 23 years! He sure knew what he was talking about!

Leur professeur a été plusieurs fois champion américain et a été sur la coupe du monde pendant 23 ans! Il savait évidemment de quoi il parlait!

We have had friends staying with us for the last couple of days and we are really enjoying their presence. I LOVE talking with moms of grown-up children (and their children!), especially when they are funny and witty! I find it so insightful and enlightening. And needless to say, it is pretty helpful too!

Nous avons des amis chez nous depuis quelques jours et nous apprécions énormément leur présence. J'ADORE parler avec des femmes qui ont de grands enfants (et avec leurs enfants!), particulièrement quand elles sont drôles et qu'elles ont de l'esprit! Je trouve ça tellement éclairant et inspirant. Et inutile de vous dire que ça nous donne aussi un fier coup de main!

It has been a month that I am chasing toucans with my camera every time I hear one (they are much easier to hear than to see!), as well as aracaris. We just happened to be sitting at Chapy's in downtown Dominical when I turned around and noticed both species right beside me!

Ça fait un mois que je cours chercher mon appareil photo dès que j'entends un toucan (ils sont beaucoup plus facile à entendre qu'à voir), ainsi que des araçaris. In my book, learning to play chess (starting with checkers) is right there on the list of milestones next to learning to walk, biking without training wheels or cooking your first meal by yourself. I still remember clearly my father teaching me the basis of chess in the impressive living room of Hovey Manor, in North Hatley, when I was about 8 yo, while I drank hot chocolate near the beautiful fireplace. I can hardly believe that it is our turn to teach our girls...

Dans mon livre, apprendre à jouer aux échecs (en commençant par les dames) se situe au même niveau sur la liste des étapes importantes que le fait d'apprendre à marcher, à faire du vélo sans petites roues ou à cuisiner son premier repas tout seul. Je me rappelle clairement quand mon père m'a enseigné la base des échecs dans l'impressionnant salon du manoir Hovey, à North Hatley, quand j'avais environ 8 ans, pendant que je buvais un chocolat chaud près du magnifique foyer. J'ai peine à croire que c'est à notre tour d'enseigner les rudiments des dames à nos filles...

We are finally out of the moldy house! We LOVE our new place! You'll see why!

Nous sommes finalement sortis de la maison pleine de moisissures! On ADORE notre nouvelle maison! Vous comprendez pourquoi!

The view of the mountains facing the house is amazing, but almost impossible to photograph. It reminds me of Tuscany! Last night, we could see many fireworks (a tradition here!) coming from the houses on the other side of the valley. It was lovely!

La vue des montagnes qui font face à la maison est incroyable, mais pratiquement impossible à photographier. Ça me rappelle la Toscane! La nuit dernière, on pouvait voir des feux d'artifice (une tradition ici!) qui venaient des maisons de l'autre côté de la vallée. C'était vraiment beau!

Not speaking the language when you travel puts you in a state of humility and sometimes embarrassment. It is fine by me, even if it is a bit frustrating at times. I think I was expecting to be able to function better thanks to the fact that I speak italian and that I took Spanish classes back in college, but I could not have been more wrong…

Le fait de ne pas parler la langue quand on voyage nous rend un peu plus humble... C'est parfois gênant et même frustrant à l'occasion. Je pense que je m'attendais à être capable de fonctionner grâce à mon italien et à mes cours d'espagnol qui datent du collège, mais je me suis drôlement trompée...

For instance, when I tried to explain to Clarita, the house owner's cleaning lady, when she arrived at our place at 7 am the day after I sent the owner those photos, that they I was not critiquing her work, but rather the lack of maintenance HE did during the rainy season... She started cleaning again what she already cleaned, but that was not the problem... Ahh... I felt pretty uncomfortable but I could not explain the situation to her. I also feel that we connect her and I, and I wanted to talk with her, but the language barrier is too big... Anyways, thanks to our painful exchanges (and her great patience!), my Spanish is a bit better, and I can finally manage to sort of say what I want to say after a month of being here.

Par exemple, quand j'essayais d'expliquer à Clarita, la femme de ménage du proprio, quand elle est débarquée à 7 h du matin le lendemain de l'envoi de ces photos au proprio, que ce n'était pas une critique de son travail, mais du manque d'entretien de la maison pendant la saison des pluies... Elle a entreprit de tout renettoyer ce qu'elle avait déjà nettoyé, mais là n'était pas le problème... Ahh... Je me sentais bien mal et je n'arrivais pas à lui expliquer la situation. De plus, je sens qu'elle et moi on clique, on avait envie de discuter, mais la barrière de la langue est trop grande... Enfin, c'est grâce à nos échanges un peu pénibles (et sa grande patience!) que mon espagnol se dérouille un peu et que je peux enfin mieux me débrouiller après 1 mois.

So far, I am following this guy’s advice:

Don't concern yourself with the tenses (past, future, etc.). When you first start learning Spanish, everything will be present tense, and you will sound (to Latins anyway) exactly like the stereotypical Pakistani owner of a 7-11 that is a staple in a lot of US stand up comedy.

Ne vous préoccupez pas des temps de verbes. Quand vous commencez à apprendre l'espagnol, tout sera au présent et vous parlerez exactement (pour les latins du moins) comme le propriétaire pakistanais typique d'un 7-11 (dépanneur) souvent imité dans les numéros d'humour aux États-Unis.

It is fun to see how more fluent we are every week at the market and it is pretty exhilarating to start to understand better! Today, we were waiting for our car to be fixed (a recurent theme in our life...) and so we stayed at the market for 4 hours. On Fridays, there is only 2/3 of the sellers that are usually there on Thursays and it is much more quiet. We got really good deals when we went to see a seller and take all he had left of pineapples, bananas, mangoes, etc. It was fun to just sit in the shade in a windy corner and watch the sellers interact with each others and laugh together. One would start screaming: Sandias! Sandias ricas! Venga! Venga! (Watermelons! Delicious watermelons! Come! Come!) and someone else would start to scream back what he had to sell. We got to see a man extract cane juice and we got to drank the fresh juice. It was so good, but so sweet! We saw people walking on the side of the road in the mountains with big heavy pots on their backs and other with freshly cut banana leaves that were probably gathering at some family member's home to prepare tamales together for the Christmas meal.

C'est agréable de voir à quel point nous sommes plus à l'aise chaque semaine au marché, et c'est tellement exaltant quand on commence à mieux comprendre! Aujourd'hui, nous attendions que notre voiture se fasse réparer (un thème récurent dans notre vie...), alors nous sommes restés 4 heures au marché. Les vendredis, il y a seulement les 2/3 des vendeurs qui sont là habituellement les jeudis et c'est beaucoup plus tranquille. Nous avons eu de super bons prix quand nous sommes allés voir les vendeurs et que nous prenions tout ce qui leur restait d'ananas, de mangues, de bananes, etc. C'était agréable d'être assis à l'ombre dans un coin venteux et de regarder les vendeurs interagir les uns avec les autres et se taquiner. Il y en avait un qui se mettait à crier : Sandias! Sandias ricas! Venga! Venga! (Melons d'eau! Délicieux melons d'eau! Venez! Venez!) et quelqu'un d'autre se mettait à crier en réponse ce qu'il avait à vendre. On a vu un homme extraire le jus de la canne à sucre et on a bu le bon jus frais. C'est vraiment sucré! Nous avons aussi vu des gens marcher sur le bord de la route dans la montagne avec de gros chaudrons très lourds sur leurs dos et d'autres avec des feuilles de bananier fraîchement coupées qui se dirigeaient sans doute chez un des membres de leur famille pour préparer des tamales pour le repas de Noël.

Playa ventanas

Today, we went to one of our favorite beach so far, called playa ventanas (ventanas meaning windows, there are windows in the rock where the sea comes in. It is beautiful and the sound of the waves crashing in there is pretty powerful).

Aujourd'hui, nous sommes allées à l'une de nos plages préférées jusqu'à maintenant, qui s'appelle playa ventanas (ventanas signifie fenêtres, il y a des fenêtres dans les rochers où entre la mer. C'est magnifique et le le son des vagues qui cassent sur la paroi intérieure est vraiment puissant).

:: We can find the most beautiful shells there too, "real shells" as the girls say. I already told you how much I love looking for shells on the beach/On y trouve aussi de magnifiques coquillages, des « vrais coquillages » comme disent les filles. Je vous ai déjà dit combien j'aimais chercher des coquillages à la mer ::

With all the rain, the road that led to the beach has fallen down and we now have to park on a Tico farm and walk from there. It is a beautiful walk.

Then, on our way back, we stopped in Dominical to watch the sunset. The beach was crowded with surfers and young people. Dominical has that hippie vibe that is very different from the other beaches in the area.

Puis, sur le chemin du retour, nous sommes arrêtés à Dominical pour regarder le coucher de soleil. La plage était pleine de surfeurs et de jeunes gens. Dominical a vraiment une énergie hippie, bien différente des autres plages de la région.

Noël au Costa Rica

Yesterday, we went to a Christmas celebration in a nearby town. It felt pretty good to do something social (even if we did not speak to anybody really...).

Hier, nous sommes allés à une célébration de Noël dans un village voisin. C'était agréable de faire quelque chose de social (même si nous n'avons pas vraiment parlé à personne...).

There was a beautiful Nativity play. The girls were so excited!

OK, so I did not talked about this since I thought it was not fair to complain when you live in a tropical paradise. But as a good friend said to me today: even in paradise we are human... and mold is gross. We decided to come to Costa Rica at this time of year especially because usually the rainy season is over. But this year, it clearly is not. Someone told us that trying to predict when the rainy season will end is like trying to guess the lotery numbers... But let me just tell you that if we come back it will be between January and June. I will take snow anytime instead of rain... It has rained more in 3 weeks here than in the 5 years we lived in the Yukon. And I am not kidding.

OK, je ne vous ai pas parlé de cela encore parce que je trouvais que je n'avais pas le droit de me plaindre comme nous sommes dans un petit paradis tropical. Mais comme une bonne amie m'a dit aujourd'hui : même au paradis, on est humain... et la moisissure, c'est dégueulasse! Nous avons décidé de venir au Costa Rica à ce temps-ci de l'année précisément parce qu'habituellement la saison des pluies est terminée, mais cette année ce n'est évidemment pas le cas. Quelqu'un nous a dit que d'essayer de prédire la fin de la saison des pluies était comme essayer de deviner les numéros chanceux à la loterie... Laissez-moi juste vous dire que si on revient, ce sera sans aucun doute entre janvier et juin. Je prendrais de la neige n'importe quand contre de la pluie... Il a plu plus en 3 semaines que pendant les 5 ans que nous avons habité au Yukon. Et je suis sérieuse.

Most "American" houses built to rent are not lived-in during the rainy season and many owners do not pay for someone to come and clean and air the place every week (a necessity in such a climate), so the houses get terribly moldy...

La plupart des maison « américaines » construites pour être louées ne sont pas habitées pendant la saison des pluies et de nombreux propriétaires négligent de payer pour les faire nettoyer et aérer toutes les semaines (une nécessité dans un tel climat), alors les moisissures s'installent...

Today, we started to pack because we are finally getting out of this place this week. Most of our clothes stink terribly of mold and some of them even have fuzzy mold on them, as well as our all our suitcases and backpacks, everything leather, and many more items. I am very sensitive to smell and the smell of mold is almost unbearable to me right now...

We had to move the girls clothes from their room shelving (that was so full of mold, even after we washed it with vinegar, that the clothes were damp and mold just from being on them and because of the lack of air circulation) to the living room under the ceiling fan (and we need to rotate them so the shirt under the pile doesn't get moldy)...

Aujourd'hui, nous avons commencé à faire nos valises car nous sortons enfin d'ici cette semaine. La plupart de nos vêtements puent la moisissure et certains ont même du « mou-mou », ainsi que toutes nos valises et sacs à dos, tout ce qui est en cuir et beaucoup d'autres choses. Je suis très sensible aux odeurs et l'odeur de moisissure est presque insupportable pour moi à l'heure actuelle...

Il a fallu déplacer les vêtements des filles qui étaient dans l'étagère dans leur chambre (qui était tellement pleine de moisissures, même après que nous l'ayons lavé au vinaigre, que les vêtements devenaient humides et moisis juste à y être et à cause du manque de circulation d'air) dans le salon sous le ventilateur de plafond (et nous devons faire la rotation afin que le morceau de linge qui est sous la pile ne moisisse pas)...

The dryer is finally working, so we have been able to wash and dry all our clothes before putting them back in our suitcases. However, two hours later, everything was damp again... It is the same for sheets and pillows, they are always damp. Yuk! There won't be any dryer in our new house since it comes with rentals that are usually a thousand dollars or more per month... but it the sun can come out, we will be able to line-dry our clothes.

La sécheuse fonctionne finalement, alors nous avons enfin pu laver et sécher nos vêtements avant de les remettre dans nos valises. Cependant, deux heures plus tard, tout était à nouveau humide... When we moved in, the house had not been lived-in for a while, nor been cleaned yet (we arrived two days earlier than planned) and the fridge was so moldy that the food we put in it tasted of mold... The appliances are old and the fridge is leaking...

Quand nous avons emménagé, la maison n'avait pas été habitée depuis un certain temps et n'avait pas encore été nettoyée (nous sommes arrivés deux jours plus tôt que prévu) et le frigo était tellement plein de moisissures que la nourriture qu'on y mettait goûtait la moisissure... Les électros sont super vieux et le frigo coule...

Yes, this place is gross, I tell ya! So why are we still here? Well, because we paid for the first month and December is usually extremely expensive and most places are all booked already. We found a great new home and they are expecting the remaining furniture to be delivered this week. Needless to say, we can't wait to live in a NEW house! If the rain can stop, the mold situation should be under control too.

Oui, cette maison est plutôt dégueulasse! Alors, pourquoi sommes-nous encore ici? Et bien, parce que nous avions payé le premier mois et que décembre et un mois extrêmement cher et que la plupart des endroits sont déjà loués. Nous avons trouvé une super maison neuve et ils attendent le reste des meubles qui devrait être livrés cette semaine. Inutile de vous dire que nous avons très hâte de déménager dans une NOUVELLE maison! Si la pluie peut cesser, la moisissure sera sous contrôle.

... is that between the touristy villas, condos and restaurants, there is the real Tico life. Small and simple tico houses (and some are simply some pieces of metal scraps held together...), sodas (the Tico version of the roadside diners that often serve delicious casado or gallo pinto for next to nothing), fruit trucks delivering the roadside sellers their stock for the day, children walking to school for pretty long distance sometimes on the side of very narrow and busy roads...

... c'est qu'entre les villas, les condos et les restos touristiques, il y a la vraie vie des Ticos. De petites maisons très simples (et d'autres qui sont simplement quelques grands morceaux de tôles retenus ensemble), des sodas (la version tica de la patate du coin, mais qui sert souvent des délicieux casado ou gallo pinto pour trois fois rien), des camions de fruits qui livrent la marchandise aux vendeurs installés sur le bord de la rue, des enfants qui marchent à l'école le long de routes très étroites et achalandées, parfois sur de longues distances...

The Ticos are not rich, but they sure seem to be happy and hard-working people. It is a great lesson for our girls to see poverty with their own eyes and not like an abstract concept. The other day, we saw some people that made a checkers game out of water bottle tops on a board that had been painted on a cement block. Aisha asked me innocently why they did not buy one instead. And that led us to a discussion about money and how some people just don't have the luxury to buy everything they want and they get very creative. We also had to explain to the girls why we have to be very careful of not leaving anything in our truck, of not leaving our belongings unattended at the beach (why we cannot all be in the sea together if we bring the camera). They were pretty shocked to find out that people can steal from us, but I think they understand better now. Travel broadens the mind!

Les Ticos ne sont pas riches, mais ils semblent heureux et travaillants. C'est une leçon incroyable pour nos filles de voir la pauvreté avec leurs propres yeux, et non pas comme un concept abstrait. L'autre jour, nous avons vu des gens jouer aux dames avec des bouchons de bouteilles d'eau sur une planche qui avait été peinte sur un bloc de ciment. Aisha m'a candidement demandé pourquoi ils n'en n'achetaient pas un à la place. Et nous avons eu une discussion sur l'argent et comment certaines personnes n'ont pas le luxe d'acheter tout ce qu'ils veulent et qu'ils sont donc très créatifs. Nous avons aussi dû expliquer aux filles pourquoi nous devions être très prudents de ne rien laisser dans le camion et de ne pas laisser nos choses sans surveillance à la plage (et pourquoi nous ne pouvons pas tous nous baigner ensemble quand on amène l'appareil photo). Elles étaient plutôt dérangées par l'idée que les gens pourraient vouloir nous voler nos choses, mais je pense qu'elles comprennent mieux maintenant. Les voyages forment la jeunesse comme on dit!

Meeting another raw food family

Today, we were blessed to spend part of the day with a wonderful family on the farm where they live right now. The caretaker took us around the farm and showed us all the different fruit trees (start fruit trees, papaya trees, passion fruit trees, mamon trees, a little durian tree and we even tasted a strange and interesting fruit called huevo de mono - monkey's egg) and wild greens. We tasted honey right from the hive (it was a very small type of bee that doesn't sting), then we went to the green house and picked all we needed to fix ourselves a salad.

Aujourd'hui, nous avons eu l'honneur de passer une partie de la journée avec une merveilleuse famille sur la ferme où ils habitent. Le responsable de la ferme nous a fait faire le tour et nous a montré différents arbres fruitiers (caramboles, papayes, fruits de la passion, mamons (litchi rouge poilu), un petit arbre de durian et nous avons même goûté un drôle de fruit plutôt bon qui s'appelait huevo de mono - œuf de singe) et des verdures sauvages. Nous avons goûté à du miel directement de la ruche (produit par de toutes petites abeilles qui ne piquent pas), puis nous sommes allés dans les serres récolter ce dont nous avions besoin pour préparer une salade.

While we shared our meal in their beautiful open house, we got to ask them tons of questions on the raw food diet and living in Costa Rica, Thailand and unschooling too. They are such gentle and enlightened souls and their children are just beautiful and glowing.

Pendant que nous partagions le repas dans leur belle maison ouverte, nous avons pu leur poser des tonnes de questions sur l'alimentation vivante, la vie au Costa Rica et en Thaïlande et sur l'apprentissage libre. Ils sont vraiment de belles âmes douces et inspirantes et leurs enfants rayonnent.

We also went to the Feria with them so they could tell us where to find the good organic fruits, where to buy the kale, the best raw cookies, the best local Macadamia nuts,etc. It was so helpful! They gave us a pretty good tip: they said that in any market, just look for the old farmers with a small booth and not many fruits and veggies of each type. They are the ones who don't have the money to buy pesticides and other chemical fertilizers...

Nous sommes aussi allés à la Feria avec eux afin qu'ils nous disent où trouver les bons fruits bio, ou acheter le kale, les meilleurs biscrus, les noix de Macadam locales, etc. C'était tellement aidant! Ils nous ont donné un bon conseil : peu importe le marché, chercher les vieux fermiers qui ont un petit kiosque avec peu de fruits et de légumes de chaque sorte. Ce sont ceux qui ont probablement moins d'argent pour acheter des pesticides et des engrais chimiques...

Then, I spoke on the phone to a contact a friend gave me who lives in Ojochal where we will be. It just became so clear to me that here, everything is shared and learned by word of mouth! She gave me such great information in that 20 minute conversation! Wow! I have the name of another French-speaking homeschooling family in the area, I know where the library is located and what their opening hours are, I know of a great secret spot to access (another!) waterfall, I know that the best pest control is having 5-6 chickens roam free around your house all day (they will eat all the insects, fire ants, scorpios, snakes eggs and baby snakes, I know that you can be a foster family for a dog even for only 4 months and that they are by far the best alarm system you can get and many many other things too...

Puis, j'ai parlé au téléphone à un contact qu'une amie m'avait laissée qui habite à Ojochal où nous déménagerons bientôt. C'est maintenant très clair pour moi qu'ici, tout s'apprend par le bouche à oreilles! Elle m'a donnée tellement de bons renseignements en 20 minutes! Wow! J'ai le nom d'une autre famille francophone qui fait l'école-maison dans le coin, je sais où se situe la bibliothèque et quelles sont les heures d'ouverture, je connais maintenant un bel endroit secret pour avoir accès à une (autre!) chute, je sais que le meilleur moyen de contrôler les insectes, fourmis piquantes, scorpions et serpents est d'avoir 5 à 6 poules qui se promènent librement autour de la maison, je sais qu'on peut être famille d'accueil pour un chien, même si on est ici seulement 4-5 mois et que c'est de loin le meilleur système d'alarme qu'on peut avoir, et beaucoup, beaucoup d'autres choses...

Are you debt free, or car free or gluten free? Do you give to charity or volunteer at shelters or build schools for Africa? Is your TV as large as mine, or your penis?

Would we stop striving to improve? Would that be horrible, if we were just content and didn’t need to better ourselves every minute of every week? Would we be lazy slobs, or would we instead be happy, and in being happy do things that make us happy rather than make us better? And in being happy, perhaps we would show others how to be happy? And crazy as it might sound, maybe we’d start a little mini-revolution of happiness, so that people wouldn’t feel so inadequate, or need to spend every dime on products, or spend all their time on self-improvement.
A revolution of contentment.

Two waterfalls in a day

OK, I know I already posted about gringo pricing this morning, but we had such an exceptional day, I can't wait to share some photos with you... So two posts today it will be!

Can you believe that we were totally alone? This is one of the thing that surprises me the most about Costa Rica so far... I know it is not the super high season yet, but the beaches and touristy spots are deserted (OK, not Manuel Antonio, but all the rest is!). I am not going to complain!

Gringo pricing

Have you ever heard the expression Gringo pricing? Well, here is a good definition that I borrowed from these guys.

Avez-vous déjà entendu l’expression « prix de gringos »? En voici une bonne définition que j’ai prise ici.

Gringo Pricing: the seemingly inalienable right or practice of indiscriminately raising the price (often substantially) of a product or service solely because the purchaser of said product or service is caucasian.

Prix de gringos : le droit ou la pratique apparemment inaliénable d’augmenter le prix à tort et à travers (et souvent substantiellement) d’un produit ou d’un service seulement parce que l’acheteur dudit produit ou service est caucasien.

Gringo pricing is a fact of life in Costa Rica. They think we’re rich; or at least richer than them, which may or may not provide the rationale for this behavior, it’s hard to say, but they really do seem to believe this practice is justified. Hell, maybe it is.

Les prix pour les gringos sont une réalité ici au Costa Rica. Les Ticos pensent que nous sommes riches, ou du moins, plus riches qu’eux, ce qui peut ou non leur donner une bonne raison d’adopter ce comportement, c’est dur à dire, mais ils ont vraiment l’air de croire que cette pratique est justifiée. Et peut-être qu’elle l’est, qui sait!

In her great book Living abroad in Costa Rica, Erin Van Rheenen says: Travelers who know the vast public markets of Mexico, Guatemala, and other developing countries may be surprised to see few such places in Costa Rica. Forget offering a quarter of the asking price, then settling in for 20 minutes of animated haggling, including the old ruse of pretending to walk away so that the merchant will call you back with a better deal (Cat’s note: we tried it, didn’t work, we only insulted the seller…). In Costa Rica, you pretty much pay the asking price. There’s a little bit of room to move, but not much. The best way to do it is to go with someone who knows what a decent price is for what you need.

Dans son excellent libre Living abroad in Costa Rica, Erin Van Rheenen écrit : Les voyageurs qui connaissent les vastes marchés publiques du Mexique, du Guatemala et d’autres pays en voie de développement seront peut-être surpris de voir qu’il n’y a que peu d’endroits du genre au Costa Rica. Au Costa Rica, vous payez pas mal le prix demandé. Il y a un petit peu de place à la négociation, mais pas beaucoup. Of course, if you shop in highly touristic areas, like Dominical, gringo prices are the norm, so expect to pay more, even at the grocery store. Even the locals don't shop there!

Bien sûr, si vous magasinez dans les zones très touristiques, comme à Dominical, les prix de gringos sont la norme, alors attendez-vous à payer plus, même à l'épicerie. Même les locaux ne font pas leur course là!

At first, we felt like we needed to bargain and make sure we would not get ripped off… The more we are here, the more we realize that this is not true. Some prices are higher, some are lower, but that's the same back at home. It is a fact of life and it’s OK. I am happy to pay 1 $ for a pineapple instead of 75 cents, it’s still very cheap for such quality fruits. Often, we ask if there is a discount for more volume. When I see the Tico houses and the rate for which they work (the cleaning lady here works for $3/hour and she gets a lot of things done in an hour!) and how hard they work, I am glad to give them what they ask for without arguing. I think this is a fair exchange.

Au début, nous avions l’impression que nous devions négocier et s’assurer de ne pas se faire avoir… Mais plus nous sommes ici, plus nous prenons conscience de combien ce n'est pas vrai. Certains prix sont plus élevés, d'autres sont plus bas, c'est la même chose à la maison. Ça fait partie de la vie ici et c’est correct. Je suis contente de payer 1 $ pour un ananas au lieu de 0,75 $, c’est encore bien peu chère pour des fruits de si grande qualité. Souvent, on demande s’il y a un prix spécial pour une plus grosse quantité. Quand je vois les maisons des Ticos et le taux horaire pour lequel ils travaillent (la femme de ménage travaille à 3 $ de l’heure ici et elle en accomplit du travail en une heure!) et combien ils travaillent dur, je suis contente de leur donner ce qu’ils me demandent sans argumenter. Je pense que c’est un échange équitable.

The blessing of boredom

When was the last time you felt bored? Ah! I hear you laugh all the way from up there!To be honest, until the last couple of days, I could not think of when I last felt bored… We say that boredom is healthy for children, that through boredom, they find their inner creative voice. Some even call it Constructive boredom. But which adult has time to be bored?

C’est quand la dernière fois que vous avez ressenti de l’ennui? Ah, je vous entends rire jusqu’ici! Pour vous dire la vérité, jusqu’à il y a quelques jours, je n’aurais pas pu dire moi non plus… On dit que l’ennui est sain pour les enfants, que grâce à l’ennui, ils connectent avec leur créativité intérieure. Certains parlent même de l’ennui constructif. Mais quel adulte a le temps de s’ennuyer?

You know what, at first, as weird as it may sound, feeling bored did not feel very comfortable… Not knowing how the day (and days!) ahead will unfold, no plans, no to-do list, no specific goals… Then, I came accross this and it struck a chord…

Vous savez quoi, au début, aussi étrange que cela puisse paraître, m’ennuyer n’était pas très agréable. Ne pas savoir comment la journée (les journées!) qui viennent vont se dérouler, pas de plans, pas de liste de choses à accomplir, pas d’objectifs spécifiques… Puis, je suis tombée sur ceci et ça a touché une corde sensible…

So until I had my children (at 25 yo), I tried to fill up my life as much as I could, because it was my way of protecting myself against anxiety (not that it worked great!). Now, I am not anxious anymore and since having children, having time to do nothing is something that I look forward to… Now that the girls are bigger and can spend hours on hand playing together (sometimes!), pockets of time are freed during the day where I can read or create. This is new and I still have a bit of guilt around it, like I should be engaging with them or doing something productive, but I am finding peace with this and when I can truly let go and enjoy that time for myself, creativity emerges, and I feel really free.

Vous voyez, c’est comme si dans mon logiciel personnel, c’est inscrit que l’ennui peut provoquer de l’anxiété. Jusqu’à ce que je devienne maman (à 25 ans), j’ai essayé de remplir ma vie le plus possible, parce que c’était ma façon de me protéger de l’anxiété (pas que ça marchait tellement!). Maintenant, je ne suis plus anxieuse et depuis que j’ai eu des enfants, le fait d’avoir du temps pour ne rien faire est désormais quelque chose que je recherche. Comme les filles sont plus grandes et qu’elles peuvent passer des heures à jouer ensemble (parfois!), j’ai des petits moments qui se libèrent dans la journée où je peux lire ou créer. C’est nouveau et je me sens un peu coupable par rapport à ça, comme si je devais être avec elles ou faire quelque chose de productif, mais je me sens de plus en plus en paix avec ça et quand je peux vraiment m’abandonner et profiter de ce temps qui m’est donné, je sens la créativité monter et je me sens vraiment libre.

Boredom is such a luxury in today’s society. Actually, boredom is the luxury of people who have time. Since I am here in Costa Rica, I have been reading the same great blogs I usually follow, but feeling distant and witnessing all the hustle and bustle of holiday preparation, handmade gifts, baking, rushing here and there, and I have been feeling so grateful to not be in that space this year, and hopefully not next year, and the next, and the next... I am finally really getting how less is more and much less is even more…

L’ennui est vraiment un luxe dans notre société actuelle. En fait, l’ennui est le luxe des gens qui ont du temps. Depuis que je suis au Costa Rica, j’ai continué à lire les super blogs que je suis depuis quelques années, mais je me sens loin et je suis témoin de tout ce branle-bas de combat en vue de la préparation des Fêtes, des cadeaux faits main, des biscuits et chocolats qui sont confectionnés, des courses ici et là, et je me sens tellement reconnaissante de ne pas être dans ce tourbillon cette année, et j’espère l’an prochain, et l’autre encore… Je comprends vraiment à quel point moins, c’est plus, et encore moins, c’est encore plus…

I remember when we had the farm a couple of years ago and my grandma was staying with us. I would sit with her 5 minutes at night before she went to bed (when I had time!) and feel the huge gap between her an me. She was bored. She had so much time, she did not know what to do with it. I had no time. I was rushing from one thing to the other all day long. And I wanted my life to be simpler. And now it is.

Je me souviens quand on avait la ferme il y a quelques années et que ma grand-mère habitait avec nous. Je m’assoyais avec elle 5 minutes le soir avant qu’elle aille au lit (quand j’avais le temps!) et je sentais l’incroyable écart entre nous. Elle s’ennuyait. Elle avait tellement de temps qu’elle ne savait quoi en faire. Je n’avais pas de temps. Je courais d’une chose à une autre toute la journée. Et je voulais simplifier ma vie. Et maintenant, ça y est.

So, I feel extremely grateful and rich. Because I have time to be bored.

Je me sens incroyablement reconnaissante et riche. Parce que j’ai le temps de m’ennuyer.

Inspired by all the fruits that we saw at the market yesterday, we draw and wrote in our scrapbook today.

Inspirées par tous les fruits que nous avions vus au marché hier, nous avons dessiné et écrit dans notre scrapbook aujourd'hui.

We went to Hacienda Baru, a nice ecotourism lodge near where we are staying to get some nice plastified wildlife, tropical fruits and insects (and arachnids) guides. We also looked at the tours they offer since they had been recommanded to us by many people (they even have French tours on request, which is pretty rare here!) and considered the canopy tour (zipline, adapted to all ages), but at $35 box for 2-3 hours, we decided it could wait...

Nous sommes allées à Hacienda Baru, un centre de villégiature écotouristique près de chez nous pour se procurer des dépliants plastifiés sur la faune, les fruits tropicaux et les insectes (et les arachnides). Nous avons aussi regardé les activités organisées qu'ils proposaient comme ils nous ont été chaudement recommandé par plusieurs personnes (ils offrent même des visites guidées en français sur demande, ce qui est plutôt rare ici!) et nous avons considéré le tour de la canopée (tyrolienne, adaptée pour tous les âges), mais à 35 $ par personne pour 2-3 heures, nous avons décidé d'attendre un peu...

:: All the organic growers wear those green shirts (and are located at the back of the market) so they are easy to recognize. This is the lady who sells the kale and the raw goat milk/Tous les fermiers bio portent des chemises vertes (et sont installés au fond du marché), ils sont ainsi faciles à reconnaître. Voici la femme qui vend le kale et le lait de chèvre cru que l'on achète ::

And we discovered something so delicious... Sapote pudding! No need to add any sugar, just a tad bit of cinnamon and ginger (and raw milk if you want!) and you have raw pumpkin pie!

Et nous avons découvert quelque chose de délicieux.. Du pouding de sapotille! Pas besoin d'ajouter du sucre, simplement un peu de cannelle et de gingembre (et de lait cru si vous voulez!) et vous avez de la tarte à la citrouille crue!

I did yoga outside with the rising sun and the jungle awakening around me this morning. Pure bliss... Can someone pinch me?

J'ai fait du yoga dehors avec le soleil levant et la jungle qui se réveillait autour de moi. Du pur bonheur... Est-ce que quelqu'un peut me pincer?

We started a Costa Rica scrapbook that the girls will fill with drawings, pictures, tickets and all they feel like putting in it...

The waves

After working a bit this morning, we left for the beach soon after lunch. We are starting to learn when is the best time to go (low tide) and what beaches has which type of waves, which have strong rip currents at which moment of the tide, and we are sure enjoying our time at the beach!

Après avoir travaillé un peu ce matin, nous sommes partis pour la plage peu de temps après dîner. Nous commençons à savoir quand c’est le bon temps d’y aller (à marée basse) et quelles plages ont quels types de vagues, lesquelles ont de gros courants à quel moment de la marée, et nous y passons vraiment du bon temps!

À l’aller, nous sommes arrêtés pour rencontrer un agent d’immeuble responsable de la location de maisons dans le coin. Nous sommes allés visiter une superbe maison avec une vue incroyable sur la mer… et nous y sommes allés en maillot de bain!! Il y a bien juste ici qu’on ferait ça!

On the way there, we stopped to meet a realtor that is responsible for some house rentals in the area. We went to visit an amazing house with an incredible view of the sea… and we went in bathing suit!! Only in Costa Rica!

Puis, au retour, nous sommes allés à Ojochal, la communauté francophone dont je parlais l’autre jour, rencontrer Léo (une recommandation de Gilles-le-boulanger) qui est là depuis 20 ans et qui est au courant de tout ce qu’il y a à louer au village. Il nous a amené voir une magnifique maison avec une vue imprenable sur un autre versant de montagne (on se serait cru en Toscane) qui est en train d’être finalisée (une maison neuve, qui n’a jamais passé de saisons des pluies! Des matelas neufs! Pas de moisissures!). On attend des nouvelles de tout cela dans les prochains jours. On ira sans doute en voir d’autres bientôt.

Then, on the way back, we went to Ojochal, the French community I mentionned the other day, to meet Leo (a recommandation given by Gilles-the-baker) who has been living here for 20 years and who knows about most of what is available for rent in the village. He brought us to see a beautiful house with a stunning view of the other mountain side (it felt like we were in Tuscany) that is about to be finished (a new house, that never went through any rainy season! New mattresses! No mold!). We are waiting to hear from those in the next few days. We will probably go see more soon.

Feria de Uvita

This morning, we went to the farmer's market in Uvita which is closer to where we stay than San Isidro's. We knew it was smaller, but we did not expect it to be that small... It really is an expats' market actually. The sellers and buyers are almost all gringos (except for the only organic greens booth) and the prices are very high (similar to what we would pay in Canada). However, we were quite happy to find some turmeric, good Madras curry, natural peanut butter, delicious homemade sauerkraut and organic focaccia (a treat for the girls' lunch baked by Gilles from Deauville who has been living in Ojochal for 7 years, the biggest French community in CR, 15 min from Uvita!). There were some goji berries, raw macadamias (and other out of price nuts!), dried pineapples and papayas (about 8 times the price of fresh - I would make a fortune with my Excalibur dehydrator here!), hibiscus tea, organic cacao, fresh cheese ($5 for a small piece), organic sourdough bread ($10!), chocolate bread ($7 for a very small loaf) and homemade bulgar yogurt ($4 for a small container and $6 for one a bit bigger). We didn't buy any of that, of course!

Ce matin, nous sommes allés au marché fermier d'Uvita qui est plus près d’où on habite que celui San Isidro. Nous savions que c'était un plus petit marché, mais nous ne pensions pas qu'il était aussi petit... C'est en fait plutôt un marché d'expats. Les vendeurs et les acheteurs sont pour la plupart des gringos (mis à part le kiosque de verdures bio) et les prix sont très élevés (semblables à ceux du Canada). Cependant, nous étions bien heureux de trouver du curcuma (oui, Nini!), du bon cari de Madras, du beurre d’arachides naturel, de la succulente choucroute maison et de la focaccia bio (un petit spécial pour le dîner des filles, faite par Gilles de Deauville qui habite à Ojochal depuis 7 ans, la plus importante communauté francophone au CR, à 15 min d'Uvita!). Il y avait des baies de goji, des noix de macadams crues (et d'autres noix hors de prix!), des ananas et des papayes séchées (environ 8 fois le prix des fraîches - je ferais fortune avec mon déshydrateur Excalibur ici!), de la tisane d'hibiscus, du cacao bio, du fromage frais (5 $ pour un petit morceau), du pain au levain bio (10 $!), du pain au chocolat (7 $ pour une toute petite miche) et du yogourt bulgare maison (4 $ pour un tout petit contenant et 6 $ pour un contenant à peine plus gros). Nous n'avons rien acheté de cela, bien entendu!

However, we got to meet some nice expats that gave us really good info too. We met with Sabina, a Canadian woman with Polish origins that has been living here for 13 years. She went to the supermarket with us to help us find tahini, integral flour and other goodies... (I finally found some natural laundry detergent!). She also took us to her Bed and Breakfast in Hatillo (10 minutes from where we live) and we talked for a good hour. She is such a gold mine of information! This is priceless! We will probably stay in her cute (and clean!) little cabina for the x-mas week (more on this later). She has a salt-water pool and a beautiful outdoor restaurant surrounded by nature with trails and yoga platforms (she actually have Vipassana retreats at her place in January and February).

Nous avons par contre rencontré de gentils expats qui nous ont donné de bons renseignements. Nous y avons aussi rejoint Sabina, une canadienne d'origine polonaise qui est ici depuis 13 ans. Nous sommes allés avec elle au supermarché pour trouver du tahini et de la farine complète bio, et d'autres trucs... (j'ai finalement trouvé du savon à linge naturel!). Elle nous a amené à son Bed and Breakfast à Hatillo (à 10 minutes d’où nous habitons) et nous avons parlé avec elle pendant une bonne heure. C'est une vraie mine d'or de renseignements! Ça n'a pas de prix! Nous resterons sans doute dans sa petite cabine (très propre!) pour la semaine après Noël (plus de détails à venir). Elle a une piscine à l'eau salée et une beau resto extérieur dans la nature entouré de sentiers et de plate-formes de yoga (il y a des retraites de Vipassana chez elle en janvier et février d'ailleurs).

:: The oranges here don't look really attractive from the outside, but they are extremely juicy and a little less sweet than the Florida and Californian oranges we know/Ici, les oranges ne sont pas très jolies, mais elles sont extrêmement juteuses et un peu moins sucrées que celles de Floride ou de Californie que l'on connaît ::

We were all craving greens so much that we ate a whole bunch of kale and another one of bok-choy as is on our way back. It was so cool to see the girls munching away! They had been asking for Hibiscus leaves everytime we drive by a bush and we tought it was the sheer pleasure of picking wild greens that made it more attractive to them, but we realize their bodies was asking for some greens. They also drank the whole green smoothie I made myself for breakfast this morning... I definitely miss my juicer more than anything... I am so glad Geneviève convinced me to bring my Vita-mix!

Nous avions tous besoin de verdures! Nous avons dévoré tout un bouquet de kale et un autre de bok-choy tels quels sur le chemin du retour. C'était vraiment génial de voir les filles aller! Elles demandaient pour des feuilles d'Hibiscus chaque fois que nous passions à côté d'un buisson, mais nous pensions que c'était tout simplement par plaisir de cueillir leur nourriture, mais nous avons constaté que leurs corps avaient vraiment envie de vert. Elles ont aussi tout bu le smoothie vert que j'avais préparé pour mon déjeuner... Je m'ennuie vraiment de mon extracteur à jus... Une chance que Geneviève m'a convaincue d'amener mon Vita-mix!

San Isidro's Farmer's Market

Aujourd’hui, nous sommes allés au marché fermier de San Isidro de El General, un marché qui se tient tous les jeudis dès 8 h, à environ 40 minutes de chez nous. Quelle abondance, mes amis! Je n’avais pas amené mon appareil photo pour des raisons de sécurité, mais comme c’est plutôt tranquille à ce temps-ci de l’année, je l’apporterai la semaine prochaine pour vous faire voir à quoi ça ressemble.

Today, we went to San Isidro de El General farmer’s market, that is held every Thursday from 8 am, about 40 minutes from where we live. So much abundance, my friends! I didn’t bring my camera for safety reasons, but since it is still pretty quiet at this time of year, I will bring it next week to show you what it looks like.

Malgré le fait qu’il est inévitable qu’ils nous fassent des prix de gringos, nous sommes déjà rendus un peu plus habiles dans le négoce. L’avantage est aussi qu’on achète en grande quantité et que nous sommes en position de faire baisser le prix. Nous avons acheté une caisse d’ananas (20 succulents gros ananas pour 16 $ — 80 sous chacun!), une caisse de petites bananes (6 grosses mains pour 3 $), 15 jeunes noix de coco, 5 gros sacs d’oranges et 5 grands jus d’orange fraîchement pressés pour 10 $!! On a des mangues (de type piña), mais elles sont quand même chères, car ce n’est pas la saison (20 mangues pour environ 15 $), des fruits de la passion, des sapotes, des melons, des mûres, et plus encore.

Despite the fact that it is unavoidable that they give us gringo prices, we are becoming more skilled at negociating. The advantage is also that we are buying in bulk and we are in a position to drop the prices. We bought a pineapple box (20 juicy and sweet big pineapple for 16 $ - 80 cents each!), a box of small bananas (6 big hands for 3 $), 15 young green coconuts, 5 big bags of oranges and 5 tall glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice for 10 $!! We have mangoes (piña variety), but they are still expensive since they are not in season (20 mangoes for about 15 $), passion fruits, mammey sapote, melons, boysenberries, and more.

On a aussi trouvé du lait de chèvre et de vache cru, du bon fromage frais, de l’huile de coco bio et crue, du miel et des tortillas fraîches à très bon prix. C’est drôle, tous les produits liquides se vendent dans des bouteilles de Coke réutilisée!

We also found raw goat and cow’s milk, great fresh cheese, raw organic coconut oil, honey and fresh tortillas at a good price. It’s funny, all the liquid products are sold in reused Coke bottles!

Puis, nous sommes allés à l’épicerie pour nous équiper des ingrédients de base, mais aussi de bottes d’eau pour pouvoir aller cueillir des fruits et des feuilles (et des fleurs) d’hibiscus – saviez-vous que les feuilles d’hibiscus sont super nutritives? Et il y en a partout autour de la maison!- sans craindre les serpents, des pailles pour boire l’eau des noix de coco, mais aussi (et surtout!) un oreiller sans tâches de moisissures et confo pour moi (à 6 $)! Sans aucun doute le meilleur achat de la journée!

Then we went to the grocery to get the basic ingredients, but also rubber boots to be able to pick fruits and hibiscus leaves (and flowers) – did you know those were super nutricious wild greens? They grow everywhere on the property! - without fearing the snakes, straws to drink the coconut water, but also (and especially!) a comfortable pillow for me without mold (for 6 $)! Undoubtedly the best buy of the day!

Ce que nous n’avons toujours pas réussi à trouver, c’est du savon à lessive et à vaisselle naturel et surtout, non parfumé…

What we still haven’t found is some natural, and especially unscented dish soap and laundry detergent…

Puis, il va falloir perfectionner notre technique de retour… Ça fait deux fois qu’on revient à la maison avec du beurre tout fondu partout dans le fond des sacs…

And we will have to work our our return technique… We came back home with melted butter spread everywhere in the bag… twice!

Après avoir fini les courses, nous sommes allés dîner dans un soda (tous les petits restos Ticos s’appellent des sodas), où nous nous sommes régalés d’arroz con pollo et de taco doble pour trois fois rien!

After we were done shopping, we went to have lunch in a soda (all the little Ticos restaurant are called sodas), where we had some delicious arroz con pollo and taco doble for very little!

:: We have many, many pineapple! We will freeze them for smoothies! Nous avons beaucoup, beaucoup d'ananas! Nous les congèlerons pour faire des smoothies! ::

Mais là, c’est bon, j’ai tout ce qu’il me faut pour me remettre totalement au cru! Puis, j’ai trouvé mes repères en cas d’urgence-faim : Chapy’s à Dominical fait des smoothies juste fruits et glace (c’est d’ailleurs eux qui nous ont fait découvrir le succulent combo ananas-fruits de la passion-glace) et il y a quelques kiosques de fruits dans les environs qui ont presque toujours des bananes mûres ou des ramboutans qui peuvent être mangés immédiatement!

But now, I am good, I have all I need to get back to full raw! And I found some places where I can go in case of hunger-emergency : Chapy’s in Dominical makes fruits-only smoothies (it is there that we discovered the amazing passion fruit-pineapple-ice combo) and there are some fruit vendors in the area where there is almost always ripe bananas or rambutan that can be eaten on the spot!

:: Let's play name that fruit! It is manga-something, it's like a tiny unripe mango, very acidic and eaten with salt. Do you know the name of it?/Jouons à nommer ce fruit! C'est manga-quelque chose, c'est comme une petite mangue pas mûre, très acide qui se mange avec du sel. Connaissez-vous le nom? ::

C’est tellement humide à cause de toute la pluie, les vêtements ne sèchent pas… et tout est humide (les draps, les coussins du divan, les vêtements qu’on a apportés et qui n’ont pas encore été portés, les livres, les feuilles de papier…). Vivement la fin de la saison des pluies!

It is so humid because of all the rain, the clothes don’t dry up… and everything is damp (the sheets, the couch, the clothes that we brought and did not even wear, the books, the paper sheets…). Let’s hope the rainy season will end soon!

Et vous savez quoi? Nous avons aperçu notre premier couple de toucans aujourd’hui! Juste à côté de la maison!

And you know what? We spotted our first toucan couple today! Right beside the house!
