Our morning walk

If you would come with us on our morning walk, here is the view you would get after climbing the steep hill right after our house... It would be only 7 o'clock (or earlier if the howler monkeys woke you up that morning...) and the sun wouldn't be really bright yet, but you could see the sea in the distance...

Si vous veniez avec nous faire notre ballade matinale, voici la vue que vous auriez après avoir grimpé la pente prononcée juste après notre maison... Il serait seulement 7 h (si les singes hurleurs vous avaient réveillés ce matin-là) et le soleil ne serait pas encore très fort, mais vous pourriez voir la mer au loin...



Then you would walk past beautiful houses with fan palm trees in the entrance.

Puis vous passeriez à côté de superbes maisons avec des palmiers éventail dans l'entrée.





You would see lots of For sale signs and probably wonder, just like we did at first, how come there were so many. Then, you would find out that half of Costa Rica is for sale... as long as you offer the right price (so they can build another one and do the same thing again)...

Vous verriez beaucoup de maisons à vendre, et vous vous demanderiez sans doute, comme nous au début, pourquoi il y en a tant. Puis, vous comprendriez que la moitié du Costa Rica est à vendre... tant que vous offrez le bon prix (pour qu'ils puissent reconstruire une autre maison et recommencer)...



If you would stop five minutes, you could collect blue-green clay that you could pound and dry to use therapeutically afterwards. I would tell you that I actually was told that there are many veins of blue, green and purple clay in the area...

Si vous vous arrêtiez cinq minutes, vous pourriez ramasser de l'argile bleue-verte que vous pourriez réduire en poudre au mortier et sécher pour une utilisation thérapeutique par la suite. Je vous confierais qu'on m'a dit qu'il y avait plusieurs veines d'argile bleue, verte et mauve dans les environs...



Then the road would start to turn and you could see where you are coming from, on the other side of the valley. A dog from a local hotel would probably join you for the rest of the 5 km loop...

Puis, la route commencerait à tourner et vous pourriez voir d'où vous arrivez, de l'autre côté de la vallée. Le chien d'un hôtel du coin se joindrait sans doute à vous pour le reste de la boucle de 5 km...





And you would get closer to the sea. you could even start to smell it in the air...

Et vous vous approcheriez tranquillement de la mer, vous pourriez même commencer à la sentir dans l'air...



And you would walk past banana trees...

Et vous passeriez à côté de bananiers...



... of coconut trees...

... de cocotiers...



... and of ginger plants.

... et de plants de gingembre.



And the sun would start to be brighter and it would get ever warmer and the sky would be bright blue...

Et le soleil commencerait à briller plus fort, et ça réchaufferait encore plus et le ciel serait d'un bleu éclatant...



You would go down and up and down and up on the curvy road... And some mornings, depending on where the wind was coming, you could start hearing the sea...

Vous descendriez et remonteriez et redescendriez et remonteriez sur le chemin sinueux... Et certains matins, tout dépendant d'où viendrait le vent, vous pourriez commencer à entendre la mer...



And would be amazed to notice the red earth and the lush green ferns meet the sky...

Et vous auriez le souffle coupé de voir la terre rouge et les fougère d'un vert luxuriant qui rejoignent le ciel...





And finally, another reward: a beautiful window on the sea...

Et finalement, une autre récompense : une magnifique fenêtre sur la mer...



... and you would know that there are good chances that you would swim right there that afternoon...

... et vous sauriez qu'il y aurait de bonnes chances que vous vous y baignez cet après-midi...



Then you would go down and walk 2 minutes of the side of the highway...

Puis, vous redescendriez et marcheriez 2 minutes le long de l'autoroute...



And you would come into the village...

Et vous rentreriez au village...



If it would be a Tuesday or a Friday, you could get some nice fresh fish right here... And on any day, you could stop at the Pancito to get delicious Integral bread and much more delicious treats!

Si c'était un mardi ou un vendredi, vous pourriez acheter du bon poisson frais juste ici... Et tous les jours de la semaine, vous pourriez arrêter au Pancito acheter du délicieux pain intégral ou d'autres succulentes gâteries!



Then, when you would see the bridge, you knew you had about 1 km left to climb to get to the house... You would surely spot some Blue Morpho butteflies flying around you...

Puis, quand vous arriveriez au pont, vous sauriez qu'il vous resterait environ 1 km de montée avant d'arriver à la maison... Vous pourriez sans doute apercevoir des papillons Morpho bleus voler autour de votre tête...



And by then, the sun would be almost unbearably warm at this time of year (it would only be 8:30...), and this is usually where children get whiny and sweaty adults get water dripping down their legs... but there is the song of the Toucan that would greet you (and we can pretty much always spot one at this place, which is rare... you hear Toucans much more than you see them in Costa Rica) and there is the promise of a cool pool and if lucky, a papa-made-with-love smoothie waiting...

Et rendu-là, le soleil serait presque insupportablement chaud à ce temps-ci de l'année (il serait seulement 8 h 30...), et c'est là que les enfants se mettent à râler habituellement et les adultes baignés de sueur ont de l'eau qui commence à leur couler le long des jambes... mais il y a le chant du toucan qui vous encouragerait (et qu'on peut presque toujours apercevoir à cet endroit, ce qui est rare... on entend les Toucans beaucoup plus qu'on ne les aperçoit au Costa Rica) et la promesse d'une piscine fraîche et si on est chanceux, d'un smoothie fait avec amour par papa qui nous attend...

Samara... encore!

Our plan was to spend our last day with my Mom near Playa del Coco, since it was the closest beach to Liberia. When we arrived there, we found it so depressing (we also went to nearby Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama, a beach frequented mostly by locals, but they were equally depressing) that we decided to drive all the way to Samara! We had such a good time there! We even ended the day at our favorite italian restaurant in Costa Rica, Al Manglar, where Rosa told us she had some day-old lasagna for us (we all know lasagna is even better the next day). We had our Pprosciutto crudo pizza with her amazing spicy oil and topped it with her homemade Tiramisu! It was a big challenge to switch from Italian to Spanish! Che fatica!

Notre plan était de passer notre dernière journée à Playa del Coco, étant donné que c'était la plage la plus proche de Liberia. Quand nous sommes arrivés là, nous avons trouvé l'endroit tellement déprimant (et nous sommes aussi allés voir Playa Hermosa et Playa Panama, une plage de locaux près de là, mais elles étaient toutes deux tout aussi déprimantes) que nous avons décidé de parcourir la route qui nous séparait de Samara! Nous y avons passé une magnifique journée! Nous avons même fini la journée dans notre restaurant italien préféré au Costa Rica, Al Manglar, où Rosa nous a tout de suite dit qu'elle avait de la lasagne fraîche de la veille (tout le monde sait que la lasagne est encore meilleure le lendemain). Nous avons aussi mangé notre pizza au prosciutto crudo avec son huile piquante incroyable et avons couronné le tout par son excellent tiramisù. C'était tout un défi de passé de l'espagnol à l'italien! Che fatica!

El Punto hotel, Liberia

We stayed two nights in Liberia during our trip with my mom in this really cool hotel. It is right in the middle of town, so it is a bit noisy, but it really stands out from other Costan Rica hotels.

Nous avons passé deux nuits à Liberia dans cet hôtel vraiment sympa pendant notre voyage avec ma mère. Il est situé au centre-ville, alors c'est un peu bruyant, mais il se démarque vraiment des autres hôtels du Costa Rica.



There are many outside areas (library, lounge, TV area) and there is even a great kid corner that kept the girls busy while we worked.

Il y a plusieurs aires extérieures (bibliothèque, aire de repos, coin télé) et il y a même un super coin pour les enfants qui a bien occupé les filles pendant que nous travaillions.






:: The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful garden with amazing flowers and birds (here: hanging lobster claw)/Il y a un magnifique jardin avec de superbes fleurs et des oiseaux tout autour de l'hôtel (ici, des héliconies rostrées) ::


:: The hotel has been created in an old school building. There are lofts in most of the rooms. C'est en fait une ancienne école qui a été transformée en hôtel. Il y a même des lofts dans la plupart des chambres. ::




Just beside there are really cool art galleries (also in the old school building), as well as a pretty good restaurant (Casa Verde). I would fly to Liberia and stay there instead of San José anytime!

Juste à côté de l'hôtel, il y a des galeries d'art vraiment mignonnes (aussi situées dans l'ancien bâtiment de l'école), ainsi qu'un bon resto (Casa Verde). J'arriverais à l'aéroport de Liberia et je resterais ici au lieu de rester à San José n'importe quand!

Lac Arenal, Bijagua et le travail sur la route...

We drove around beautiful Lake Arenal with little girls that had spent way too much time in the car already... Traveling with children can be tricky and moving everyday or every two days is just too much for little souls... and then, it becomes unpleasant for all the adults involved. My Mom has been such a good sport!

Nous avons fait la route qui fait le tour du Lac Arenal avec de petites filles qui commençaient à avoir leur voyage de faire de la route... Voyager avec des enfants peut être difficile et changer de place tous les jours ou tous les deux jours est trop exigeant pour de petites puces... puis, ça devient désagréable pour les adultes aussi. Ma mère a été une vraie championne de la tolérance!







I know many of you wonder how come we can spend 5 months in Costa Rica, if we inherited a crazy amount of money or if we ever work... We do work! We have days without work, but it is rather rare. We just finished a very intense rush where the both of us had to be working around the clock... which makes for grumpy children... But this is our life and we love the flexibility it gives us. We feel pretty blessed we can work and travel. It really feels like there is no separation between work and play and this is a great feeling...

Je sais que plusieurs d'entre vous se demandent comment on fait pour passer 5 mois au Costa Rica et si on travaille parfois ou si on a juste hérité d'une grosse somme d'argent... Bien sûr qu'on travaille! Il y a parfois des journées sans travail, mais c'est plutôt rare. On vient juste de terminer un gros rush pendant lequel on devait tous les deux travailler en temps plus que plein... ce qui n'est pas facile pour les filles qui deviennent irritables... Mais c'est la vie que nous avons choisie et on ne la changerait pas pour rien au monde. On adore la flexibilité que cela nous procure. On se sent vraiment choyés de pouvoir travailler tout en voyageant. C'est comme s'il n'y avait pas de séparation entre la vie/le plaisir et le travail et c'est un sentiment extraordinaire...

On this trip with my mom, we worked in different hotels and cafés. Sometimes we have to drive up to an hotel where there is free unsecured wi-fi and work in the lobby... or in the truck! For those who followed our road-trip to the Yukon 2 years ago, you will remember that we also worked mainly in RV park camping laundromats and that we even got kicked out by angry Germans! We sure live dangerously!

Pendant ce voyage avec ma mère, nous avons travaillé dans différents hôtels et cafés. Parfois, il faut se rendre à un hôtel où il y a du wifi gratuit non sécurisé et travailler dans le lobby... ou dans le camion! Pour ceux qui ont suivi notre voyage au Yukon sur la route il y a deux ans, vous vous souviendrez que nous travaillions principalement dans les laundromats de camping et qu'on s'est même fait jeter dehors par de furieux Allemands! On aime vivre dangereusement!


:: Lake Arenal. On clear days, you can see the volcano from the other side of the lake/Lac Arenal. Par temps clair, on peut apercevoir le volcan de l'autre côté du lac ::

On our way to Liberia, we stopped to visit some friends who have bought a piece of land, just beside Tenorio national Park, in Bijagua. It is an amazing spot and they see two volcanoes from their house!! We wanted to go hike along the Rio Celeste (an amazing blue river in which, according to the legend, the Gods dipped their paintbrushes when they were painting the sky) in the Tenorio national Park, but we were too rushed.

En route vers Liberia, nous nous sommes arrêtés pour visiter des amis qui ont acheté une terre tout près du parc national Tenorio, à Bijagua. C'est un endroit incroyable et ils ont une vue sur deux volcans de leur maison!! On voulait faire la rando le long du Rio Celeste (une superbe rivière bleue, dans laquelle les Dieux auraient trempés leurs pinceaux tandis qu'ils peignaient le ciel, comme le veut la légende) dans le parc national Tenorio, mais nous n'avions pas le temps.


:: The biggest Ceiba of the area is right at the end of our friends' property. It is incredibly impressive! Le plus grand Ceiba (kapokier) de la région est juste au bout de la terre de nos amis. Il est vraiment majestueux! ::



This trip really made us realize the amazing biodiversity of Costa Rica. There are 17 micro-climates and you can litterally drive through many of them in a matter of hours.

Ce voyage nous a vraiment permis de constater l'incroyable biodiversité du Costa Rica. Il existe 17 micro-climats et on peut littéralement en traverser plusieurs en quelques heures de route.

La Fortuna et le volcan Arenal

We set up to do a hike to go as close as possible to the Arenal volcano (that has been dormant for the past couple years, so we can't see lava flowing at night as it used to be), but I had to turn around with Mara and Mathilde because it was a more strenuous hike than we thought (and there were lots of stinging ants, Mathilde freaked out, started running in the trail to not walk into them - there was a good 20 meters stretch COVERED in ants - and fell and got stung in many places, let's just say it was not a good way to start a hike).

Nous voulions faire une rando qui nous amènerait le plus près possible du volcan Arenal (qui est en dormance depuis quelques années, et donc on ne peut plus voir de lave couler la nuit comme c'était le cas auparavant), mais j'ai dû revenir sur mes pas avec Mara et Mathilde parce que ça s'est avéré plus difficile que nous pensions (et il y avait beaucoup de fourmis piquantes, Mathilde a paniqué, s'est mise à courir pour les éviter - il y avait un bon 20 mètre de sentier COUVERT de fourmis - et elle est tombée et s'est fait piquer à plusieurs endroits, disons juste que ce n'est pas une très bonne façon de commencer une rando).

They went back down right in the lava trail of the 1992 eruption.

Ils sont redescendus par le sentier de lave datant de l'éruption de 1992.

Then, we ended the day in the hot springs. The owner of our hotel in El Castillo (a little town just out of Arenal) told us of a spot where locals go enjoy the hot springs for free (instead of paying the exorbitant price in the luxurious lodges). We all had a blast!

Puis, nous avons fini la journée dans des sources thermales. La propriétaire de notre hôtel à El Castillo (un petit village juste à côté d'Arenal) nous avait parlé d'une endroit où vont les locaux pour profiter des sources gratuitement (au lieu de payer les prix exorbitants dans les refuges luxueux). Nous avons adoré!

:: The girls had such a good time sliding there (there were two pools, one up top and the other down and there was a pretty strong current between them. After seeing some Ticos turn it into a waterslide, they gave it a go! ::

:: Les filles se sont vraiment amusées à glisser entre les deux bassins (un plus haut et un plus bas), car il y avait un assez bon courant entre les deux. Après avoir vu des Ticos l'utiliser comme glissade d'eau, elles ont essayé à leur tour! ::
