Their first hike for a sunrise

5:30. The alarm goes off. We had said that if it was cloudy, we would not go. JF got up and checked the sky. Sure enough, there was no stars to be seen. I thought I was off the hook and could peacefully go back to sleep. But my man knows when to talk to the hiker in me and when to address the photographer. This time, it sure was time to talk to the photographer. And quickly, before she got back in Morpheus' arms... "But what if there is a carpet of clouds and the sun peaks through? It will make even better sunrise photos... and besides, how many times will we come back to the Grand Canyon?" I groaned, but couldn't help notice it was much warmer than yesterday morning at the same time... What happened in the following 45 minutes is as close as it gets to a miracle. The fridge was empty, but breakfast got made and packed (a thermos of hot porridge and a banana-dates-cacao smoothie), gloves and headlamps were found without drama and we were out the door in the dark night, smiling, ready for our adventure.

We hiked down into the Canyon 1,2 km to aptly named Ooh Aah point to watch the sunrise. It was totally worth it! When we hiked down in the dark, we were passed by a pack of mules going to the bottom of the canyon to pick clients who slept there last night. It was quite an impressive sight!

The only moment we truly paid attention to the sunrise was when we lived in the Yukon and the day after the winter solstice evening (that we celebrated around a bonfire with lots of friends, singing, playing music and sharing sun bread), we would go greet the reborn sun at our favorite spot, warm apple cider in hands. The girls were still tiny bundles on the back seat, singing our Solstice sun on repeat until it finally peaked over the mountains, at around 9:45 am. Then, we would go down to the frozen lake and draw a giant sun with our footsteps and go back home to eat more sun-shaped cookies.
