Today is the first Sunday of Advent... I love Advent, it really helps us prepare our heart for Christmas and it de-emphasizes Christmas day. It makes the whole month interesting.

Aujourd'hui, c'est le premier dimanche de l'Avent... J'adore la période de l'Avent. C'est un beau moment pour préparer notre coeur à Noël et l'accent est moins mis sur le jour de Noël. Ça rend tout le mois intéressant.

Christmas markets

It's this time of year again! I love visiting the Christmas markets, especially the one at our local Waldorf school. We got to listen to a great story, made beeswax candles and meet great people! We didn't buy anything, can you believe that?!

C'est ce temps de l'année qui revient déjà! J'adore visiter les marchés de Noël, particulièrement celui qui se tient à l'école Waldorf près de chez nous. Nous avons écouté un très beau conte, fait des chandelles en cire d'abeille et rencontré plein de belles personnes! Nous n'avons rien acheté, pouvez-vous le croire?!

And at the Salon des métiers d'art de Sherbrooke, I discovered great small businesses, among which Ressac, a company that creates beautiful bags out of old bike tires.

Et au Salon des métiers d'art de Sherbrooke, j'ai découvert des petites entreprises géniales, parmi lesquelles Ressac, une compagnie qui fabrique de superbes sacs à partir de chambres à air de vélo recyclées.



And pottery, lots of pottery! Did I ever tell you how much I love pottery?

Et de la poterie, beaucoup de poterie! Je vous ai déjà dit à quel point j'aimais la poterie?



J'ai aussi découvert un fleuriste éco-responsable, qui offre même des roses équitables, qui réduit au minimum l'emballage et l'utilisation de matières plastiques, qui utilise des engrais écologiques et qui composte tout ce qu'il est possible de composter! Les commandes se font sur Internet et la livraison est offerte partout au Québec et à l'étranger.

Another great company that I discovered is Rien ne se perd, tout se crée, a company started by two young weavers. My mom offered me a skirt and a long sleeve shirt as a x-mas gift! Made from organic cotton and hemp!

...Faire du fromage (et en manger)! On a finalement eu la chance de faire vieillir notre fromage cheddar au lait cru. Il devrait être pas mal bon rendu à Noël, si on réussit à attendre aussi longtemps.


Cream cheese made with the leftover whey from our raw cheddar to which I add some of my homemade walnut pesto and a bit of olive oil. Served with buckwheat and sunflower sprouts.

Fromage à la crème fait à partir du petit lait obtenu à la suite de la fabrication de notre cheddar au lait cru auquel j'ajoute mon pesto maison aux noix de Grenoble et de l'huile d'olive. Servi avec des pousses de sarrasin et de tournesol.

Weekend in Quebec city

It was a long time since I walked all over Quebec city! What a beautiful, beautiful city it is!

Ça faisait longtemps que je n'avais pas marché Québec d'un bout à l'autre! Qu'elle est belle Québec!

We discovered a beautiful little store on Cartier street, Ketto. Full of fairies and awesome creations. Really cool little place.

Nous avons découvert une jolie petite boutique sur la rue Cartier, Ketto. Pleine de fées et de belles créations. Un endroit totalement sympa.



Les plaines d'Abraham

I can still picture the Battle of the Plains of Abraham as if I was there. My dad once told me the story while we were walking there and I swear, I could see the blue and the red soldiers, Montcalm's surprise, and Wolfe's soldiers climbing up the rock wall at night... This time, it was a little harder to picture them, but I still could when I closed my eyes and heard the voice of my dad...

Je peux encore voir la Bataille des Plaines d'Abraham comme si j'y avais été. Mon père m'avait un jour raconté l'histoire de cette bataille quand nous y marchions et je vous jure que je pouvais voir les soldats bleus et rouges, la surprise de Montcalm, et tous les soldats de Wolfe qui grimpaient la paroi dans la nuit... Cette fois-ci, c'était un peu plus difficile de me les représenter, mais j'étais encore capable en fermant les yeux et en me remémorant la voix de mon père...

No lanterns but a vest...

We had a beautiful lantern walk at the local Waldorf school last night. There was a short play of the story of Martin, warm apple cider, bread loaves to share and even a real beggar along the path to give a piece of bread to.
It was a magical night, but I forgot my camera! The girls played St. Martin and the beggar all day!

Nous avons eu une très belle marche des lanternes hier soir à l'école Waldorf près de chez nous. Il y avait un jeu de scène de l'histoire de St. Martin, du cidre de pommes chaud, des miches de pain à partager et même un vrai mendiant le long de la route à qui donner un bout de pain. Ce fut une soirée magique, mais j'avais oublié mon appareil photo! Les filles ont joué à St-Martin et au mendiant toute la journée!

Here's my latest creation out of Kathy's wonderful wool. It is so quick to knit! The perfect project for me! I just love her chunky wool.

Voici ma dernière création avec la merveilleuse laine de Kathy. C'est tellement rapide à tricoter. C'est le projet parfait pour moi! J'adore la texture de sa laine massive.

I am dreaming of learning to spin wool these days. With all the beauties that Sara at Farmama comes up with and all the wonderful explanations that I found here, I am ready to start! I know I said I didn't want any Christmas gift, but what about a spinning wheel and a course at the guild??

Je rêve d'apprendre à filer la laine ces temps-ci. Avec toutes les belles choses que Sara de Farmama crée et avec les super explications que j'ai trouvées ici, je me sens prête à commencer! Toulouse, the goose, is here! The hens and Jules, the rooster, were quite afraid of her!

My favorite baker has made 3 loaves of his delicious sourdough kamut bread.

Mon boulanger préféré a fait 3 miches de son délicieux pain au levain au kamut.



Black bean soup and corn scones for dinner.

Soupe aux haricots noirs et scones à la semoule de maïs pour souper.



Recipe: Black bean soup

10 sun-dried tomatoes + 1 cup of boiling water
1/2 c. chopped onion
3 garlic cloves
1/2 jalapeno pepper, minced, or 1/4 tsp Cayenne
1 tbsp butter
1/2 c. chicken or vegetable broth
1 tsp cumin
1 can 28 oz (3 cups) of undrained canned tomatoes
4 cups black beans (soaked and cooked, or 2-16 oz cans)
2 tsp of salt
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
Yogurt or sour cream

Cover sundried tomatoes with boiling water. Sauté onion, garlic and chile in butter for 5 min. Add cumin, water from sun-dried tomatoes and juice from canned tomatoes. Chop tomatoes and add them. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 min. Add black beans and their liquid. Chop sun-dried tomatoes and add them. Cook 5-10 min. Add cilantro and remove from heat. Purée in food processor. Add yogourt or sour cream. Serve with corn scones.

Corn scones

1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup milk
4 tbsp sucanat or brown sugar
1 cup cornmeal
3 cups unbleached white flour
1 tsp salt
2 tsp baking powder

Preheat oven at 375 F. Combine melted butter and sucanat. Add milk. In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Add liquid ingredients. On a floured board, press the dough into 2 - 8-inch circle about 1/2 inch thick. Slice each circle into eights. Separate the wedges and place them on a buttered baking sheet. Bake 15-20 min.

Frisée in the midst, in the beautiful late afternoon light. And while I was admiring all this beauty around me while filing the pigs water buckets...

...my 3 little fairies were happily cutting their dolls hairs and beard... and many more felted people from my seasonal table and wall hangings...

...mes 3 petites fées coupaient avec grande satisfaction les cheveux et les barbes de leurs poupées... ainsi que plusieurs autres personnages feutrés de ma table de saison et des pièces murales.



A taste test of Fernande's and Frisée's milk. Frisée's milk is a little tastier (and fatter, she eats some organic grain, while Fernande only eats grass and hay).

Dégustation comparée du lait de Fernande et de celui de Frisée. Le lait de Frisée est un tantinet meilleur (et plus gras, elle mange un peu de grain bio, tandis que Fernande ne mange que de l'herbe et du foin).



My kind of appetizer (grated beets, carrots and red cabbage, sprouted wheat, speckled peas and mung beans, served with a choice of olive oil, sesame oil, tamari, lemon juice and nutritional yeast). The children get to choose what they want from the plate and create the dressing and they just love it!

Mon genre d'entrée (betteraves, carottes et chou rouge râpés, blé germé, pois tachetés germés, haricots mungos germés, servis avec huile d'olive, huile de sésame, tamari, jus de citron et levure nutritionnelle, au choix). Les enfants peuvent ainsi choisir ce qu'ils veulent dans la grande assiette et concocter la vinaigrette de leur choix. Ils adorent ça!
