Lights and shadows

We have all been down with the flu for about a week, so there has been lots of bone broth, lemon tea and cuddles in bed around here lately.

But at 88 years old, it can be a bigger challenge to fight the flu. This morning, Mémé was having a hard time breathing, and she felt pretty weak and nauseous. So I called 911. She was scared. I could tell by the way she was saying goodbye to those three little faces pressed against the window as she was embarking the ambulance. I could tell it was crossing her mind that she might not come back here. I could tell by the way she was keeping her eyes shut tight while I was holding her hand on the backseat of the ambulance that she wanted to put a barrier between her and the seriousness of the situation...

And as we were entering the house back from the hospital, our eurythmist friend came by with a wonderful gift for us. She had made us a gnome. She makes healing gnomes for children and adults. She is very connected to the elemental beings and the gnomes she makes have a life of their own. They are not toys, they really are more like a presence. I was so touched by this gift. It truly radiates a beautiful light and lots of love.

And my friend Stéphanie came by yesterday with a Valentine's gift for us. We also went for a walk together in the forest in our backyard.

She gave us this beautiful, beautiful wordless book.

Mémé is back home now. She's sleeping. I can hear her snore. They suspect the beginning of a pneumonia. She has antibiotics to take. She's strong, she will be fine.

Every time, I am just amazed at how life balances itself. How it finds a natural equilibrium between pain and joy, tears and laughter, lights and shadows.

And if you are a parent and want to hear more about lights and shadows through Katrina Kenison's words (the author of Mitten strings for God, a beautiful inspirational book, not religious even if the title can lead you to think that - one of my all time favorite book), watch this short video, it is very moving and truly beautiful.

I think I held my breath the entire time I was reading this post, Catherine...I wish you and Meme strength and comfort. I loved what you noted about life balancing itself again and again. I am thinking of you and your family as you navigate these waters...so many changes for you right now.

I watched that video at Grace's earlier in the week...very moving for me as I find myself already there with two daughters leaving home in the fall. I hope our littlest children can tolerate all the hugs and tender looks...I know mine will be more frequent and more intense from now on.
