An unenchanting day at Enchanted Rock

When you initiate your children to an activity that you especially love and wish to enjoy with them for years to come, the margin of error is really small if you want it to be a success. It requires great organization, lots of food and a good dose of fun. Maple Canyon was the perfect place to initiate the girls to outdoor rock climbing and we were all looking forward to go climbing again. Since Hueco Tanks was under wet snow when we were in the area, we were quite excited that the weather was perfect when we reached Enchanted Rock. It also has to be said that it is hard to find easy sports route in the States. It looks like trad climbing (in which you need much more - *costly* - equipment since the routes are not equipped) is much more popular. We arrived at Enchanted Rock on Friday at 3:30 pm, got the map and guidebook and went to explore the site. The girls were really eager to try bouldering (climbing on - not very high - big rocks without a rope) and JF tried to lead us to a good easy spot. The guidebook was hard to understand and we failed to find a decent boulder for them... Lots of disapointment and frustration ensued...

Since the (currently empty) campground was only for tents (and was totally booked for the weekend...), we decided to camp on the side of the road nearby to be there early on Saturday morning (the guy at the office had told us they close the parking lot as soon as it is full...). We had a nice green juice, a good dinner, we packed the bags for the next day, JF studied the guidebook for over an hour and we all went to bed early. We had the organization and food parts down.

At 8:45 am the next morning we were in the parking lot and soon enough there was a huge line-up of cars to enter the park. We felt smart for being there early!

Enchanted rock is a big round rock that seems to be constantly covered with people moving in all directions, like lice on an almost bald head. It was only 9:30 and the place was packed with hikers and climbers. The area is a collection of boulders of all size and shapes and some bigger granite walls. We were heading on the other side, so we had to climb a good chunk of Enchanted rock and go left. We were carrying an insane amount of stuff on top of all the climbing gear. I had already decided that I would only be on belaying duty since I had a (possibly) broken toe (another shower adventure...), so I had brought a book I was hoping to read in the sunshine while my loves climbed... I had also brought extra layers for the girls since being in a shaddy or sunny climbing spot at this time of year can mean a difference of at least 10 degrees... and did I say we always have to bring an insane amount of food?

So we had to walk up there and down a canyon to arrive on the purple trail, where it was strangely very quiet... The route looked way too difficult to be the easy rating indicated in the guidebook, so JF left us with all the stuff and went to explore the area. By then, I already had an effort migraine and Mathilde was getting grumpy. I suggested we play charades and the mood improved. JF finally came back and found the right trail further down. We proceeded further (all I was thinking was how will we walk all of that back with tired little climbers at the end of the day... but I am getting wiser and know when to shut up...). When we arrived at the spot at about 10:45, a bunch of scouts had put up ropes on all the easy routes and the place was packed... They told us that they wanted to use the school wall (which we knew to avoid because of popularity), but that the other scout group had already set up ropes on ALL the routes by 5:30 am this morning... And we thought we were early...

Can you see the guy on the rock? Vous voyez le gars sur la roche?

By 11, Mathilde was already on her third snack (homegirl is growing!). We decided to walk along the wall to try and find a route that could work for us. We found a route that looked (sorta) doable. We unpacked all the gear and JF started to lead it. It was tricky and after the first bolt, he deemed it way too hard for the girls. We packed our things again and went to find a sunny spot to have lunch. With our belly full, we gave a try to another route that looked OK but the first bolt was awefully high and the landing was bad. We called it off after only 10 minutes because once again, it was too hard for the girls and a bit dangerous for JF. By then, the girls had already donned their climbing shoes and played around on the big boulders, eagerly waiting to climb... There were lots of protests when we told them that was not our route, again... It was starting to be a bit ridiculous...

It was almost 2 and we heard that the scouts would be leaving at around 3 or 3:30, so we decided that the only thing to do was to go to the school wall and wait for them to be done. Plus, there might be some boulders to play on. On the way there, Mathilde threw a fit and said she was done with climbing. She wanted to go back to the trailer and that was that. Mara and Aïsha wanted to climb and I didn't think I could find our route back to the trailer without JF, so I tried to summoned all my compassion, but with a throbbing toe and a pounding headache, it required lots of hard work.

When we arrived at the school wall, there were ropes and people everywhere and it was loud. Many ropes were unattended and we asked one of the guides if we could use one of their ropes, but to no avail. Not much help on that front either... They said they should start to pack by 3:30. We had an hour and a half to kill. I tried charades. Not popular. More hiking? Forget it. So we tried to do some bouldering awefully close to one climbing group. Mara and Mathilde had a good time, but Aïsha did not like the feeling of not being held by the rope... More waiting, more whining, a little more compassion... and finally, finally, we got a route...

On oublie ça.

Checking on papa's belay and finally, a little dance and a smile... but not for long...

Mathilde called it off very soon. Climbing a slab is very different outdoor than in a gym and there are barely any footholds... Fearless Mara gave it a go and was doing great until... she freaked out... It was time to go.

Mathilde a voulu redescendre assez rapidement. C'était l'heure d'y aller.

On our way back, I banged my already throbbing toe on a big rock, just before starting our descent of Enchanted Rock where my toes would be banging at the bottom of my sneakers... This is when I decided I could call it a shitty day.

Then, I noticed I had a racoon face sunburn. Great.

Super.

JF had found a RV park with a hot tub and I felt a wave of hope that the day was not totally lost when he announced it. While he went to check it out, I opened the cupboard to get some sunflower seeds. This is when the oatmeal flakes container opened and littlerally fell on my head... JF came back while I was trying to clean the mess, announcing that children were NOT allowed in the hot tub and that it reeked of chlorine anyways... By then, I was ready to crawl into bed and cry... And this is when, my amazing man, probably sensing my despair thanks to its superpowers, told me: you know, I really wanted to thank you for your patience today. It would have been so much worst if you had lost it. I really appreciate that you kept your cool. And I smiled, something I hadn't done in a few hours... Yes, I had kept it together, with the pain and the menstrual mood and Mathilde's tireless complaints. And I could be proud of myself. In the end, it was not a shitty day. We had all learned something. It's called flexibility and letting go... my traveling buddies. I am getting better at this. Yeah, me!

And as far as climbing goes, if what they say about falling off a horse is true (to go back up right away), we'll try our luck at Reimers Ranch tomorrow... Let's see if that idea will be popular... It might take some convincing... and an insane amount of food!
